I know this is the E section but people here seem to be the most active and have the most knowledge. I have a 2007 ML500 and want to install a factory tow hitch. There is a local 2008 GL550 with an OEM set up for sale. The part number is different, but they look the same from what I can tell. I called the dealer and the GL receiver part number (164 310 1237) comes up as not being a valid number.

Does anyone know if the GL hitch will work on my ML?

Just jumped through these hoops on my W164.

The reinforcement arms are longer on the GL vs the ML - there's a notch about halfway down the arms on the GL arms that aren't there on the ML arms.

Also - don't buy a hitch without the reinforcement arms, they can only support like 1/3 of the rated weight without them!

Also, being an 07 you'll more than likely need to update to a rear SAM that has the correct connector the the hitch harness. Not too terrible to do, but you do need an SDS to do the initial config.

I'm not very active on the W164 forum, and some folks here may not like this thread here - so if you've got Q's, feel free to shoot my a PM. I've got a bunch of experience messing with the W164!

SWEET! Thank you so much for the information. Mine does have the right SAM, but I'm glad to know the GL one will not work.

I really want a GL550. My housemate's boss bought one for super cheap recently (I think $12k, it's clean too) and I got to drive it a bit. Totally want one now.

The GL is amazing. Have around 250k miles on mine. Still drives like new.

I just found the receiver for $200 locally. I'm going to buy it, but need to find the lateral arms and harness.

Scratch that. I just ordered a complete set up with harness for $600. I will be selling mine.
