Binding, popping noise from rear in reverse; what gives?
Lately I've been hearing a fairly loud "pop" coming from under the rear of the car when I back out of a parking spot. It only happens once and only in reverse. Could this be a sign that an axle is about to go? Could it the the Wavetrac? Are they known to make a popping or binding noise in reverse?
I've never had to replace IRS axles before so I don't know how to tell if they are bad or going bad if they are not leaking grease.

I have a very similar popping noise. Especially when I back up my driveway and i have to overcome the "curb" ....POP from the rear end area.
Have you figured it out?

No, not yet, but I did put the car on a lift and inspect the driveline. There were no obvious problems. Right now my theory is a bad front subframe bushing, or maybe a bad bushing in one of the suspension links.
Also, I figured out a very easy way to reproduce the noise. With your foot on the brake and the car in D, give it a little gas to load up the suspension going forward. Then shift to R (keep your foot on the brake) and give it a little gas again. That's when it will "pop", without the car having to move at all.

Yes. Exactly. I have been able to duplicate this problem exactly as you described in the past. Its been doing it for years now and really not the noticeable. But I am finally looking at it right now as I type this.
Lets keep this thread updated if we find anything. BTW, my car in question is a w211 2008 model year E550.

That sounds like a bushing type of issue, hard to duplicate in the air usually, but sometimes you get lucky. Have the rear suspension checked out before it gets worse.

i have 2007 E63, i herd the "thud" while pulling out of the parking spot wheel turned all the way to the right. i tried to recreate the situation and turns out, in my car its only happening when the suspension is set to SPORT. this thud is not coming when the suspension is on "COMFORT" . I also have worn front wheels, i need to change them. my 2c. hope it helps you.

Has anyone found out the problem to this issue? It’s getting worse and worse on my car, to the point where you would think I could find the problem very quickly while it’s on the lift. Pry bars and shaking everything in the rear shows everything in great working order.
I am completely baffled. I’m a technician by trade and can not find the issue what so ever!
