Bypass For Secondary Oil Cooler E55?
Ok, I am having the typical issues with the threads stripping on the Secondary Oil Cooler (the one with the fan). I bought a new hose and don’t want to waste it. Anyway, I have been looking for threads on bypassing this Oil Cooler and cant find one? Is there an advantage to doing this? Will the car throw codes? I live in Southern California but it does get cold for a couple weeks out of the year in my area. Thanks

Has anybody used an aftermarket alternative? I just need something to sit where the old one did. I can’t justify $600 for a small intercooler.

Well I fixed my old one. I ended up sawing off my stripped thread and tapping in a brass male male fitting. Then I braze welded the threads with blue devil braze sticks. If this works I just saved myself a lot of money.

Haha, just thought I'd point that out! Glad you came up with something, hope it stays sorted. If not, I haven't come across any one modifying or doing anything with the square cooler with the fan. Your best bet might be to try to find a used cooler on ebay that includes lines and fittings to switch out with.

My fix is solid. I’m not worried about it leaking. Thanks for the response.
You seem to have a little mix up on what the intention of the cooler is if you are worried about it getting too cold outside to bypass it :-P

I had a discussion with the AMG tech about this very subject, as I've never heard my fan on my secondary oil cooler ever run. He told me, that once the oil temperature gets to a certain threshold, then the passage opens, and the fan turns on cooling that hot oil. So what temperature does the oil need to get before the fan turns on?

Just seen this thread now.... Why on earth would you bypass this oilcooler..?
How hot does the oil need to be? Well - don't know for sure but usually around 120-130 C+ (248-266 F).
But it is thermostat controled so only opens when engine oil gets warm. Do not worry about cold oil.... These cars drive in much cooler climates than SoCal with no problems.
This oil cooler is there for a reason. This car is capable of 320 km/hr (200 mph) and under these condition a lot of heat is generated. When driving fast the windspeed will cool, but say you are using it for track driving, it gets even more varm, and thats where this little oil cooler comes into play.
Sure - for getting groceries you only use a fraction of this engine's capacity, but Mercedes put it there for a reason. If it work, don't fix it :-)

A little late on this thread but I found a solution pretty quick into owning my car. I found this machining website that actually sold a steel replacement fitting that you could screw into the cooler with thread sealant and crush washers once you cut off the old fittings and tapped the holes. In all it was a bit of a risk but I was willing to take the chance at a total of $40 for the two fittings.

Agree, I would rather find a way to turn the fan on sooner (ala the -10 STAR mod) rather than bypass it! Although truth be told, without an oil temp gauge (an omission I just don't understand from a high performance manufacturer like AMG) I don't know if my oil is even higher than optimal temp for performance (ie my understanding is that these cars run very hot which is typically for emissions purposes which is not necessarily conducive to optimum performance)
I find that odd, as the E63 does in fact have an oil temp sensor, I just replaced mine a few months ago. The oil temp was fluctuating from 81-100C.
And when my tech came back from this test drive, the temp was at 215C and the oil cooler fan was running at full blast.
My tech reset the oil temp sensor variables using Star, and all was right with the world once again.

So your saying that the E55 doesn't have an oil temp sensor? Can your oil temp be read from the cluster, like in the E63?
