‘P0730 incorrect gear ratio’ after ATF change help!

Does anyone know exactly how long the AMG e55 trans dipstick is meant to be?

I noticed with my aftermarket one it feels as if it bottoms out but if I wiggle it it kind of drops down another 2-3 inches.

I thought i had overfilled the trans because I experienced hard shifting particularly in and out of 1st. Now after draining the trans and using what feels to be the correct level for the dipstick it is shifting much smoother only trouble is if i accelerate hard when I back off and the revs begin to drop, I get this kind of clunk and the transmission disengages as if it were in neutral. I have to slow right down and shift N to D again and I have gears.
sometimes this logs the P0730 incorrect gear ratio fault.

I have tried reseting the TCU using the gas pedal trick but that didn’t change anything.

Its a pain in the *** because it feels as if it shifts much nicer, still pulls hard and I’m pretty sure the level is correct given that I’m pushing the dipstick in Far enough but it keeps logging this fault and dropping out of drive on decel.

Any ideas?

Start with knowing for certain that the fluid level is correct!

The OEM stick goes into the tube until it bottoms. I forget how far up the stick the fluid is supposed to be.

How did did the old fluid look/smell?

I have a good used trans for E-55 that I had purchased to replace the box in my E55 that got fixed via trading that car for the S65. LMK if you need it.

I presume you had no issues prior to this? The dipstick bottoms out in an obvious way. What dipstick are you using? In the correct hole? (Sorry but it happens often)

Hi,

I am using the Fuchs Titan 4134 ATF.

Definetly in the right hole lol

just this friken dipstick thing is confusing me because it’s not a positive bottoming out in there and I feel if I kind of wiggle it and push it further it drops down again but I’m pretty sure it’s not supposed to go in this far.

Im thinking I’m just gonna go drain the bloody thing and start again.

If if anyone could measure their dipstick from bottom to where it comes out the top of the fill tube it would be much appreciated.

It is a positive bottom out. I have a mark on mine at the exact height of the fill tube. I'll get the measurement tonight if no one else has by then.

Did you flush it or just drain and fill?

I have the same dipstick and went through this when I was flushing my C43. The dipstick is long enough to fit any application of the 722, which covers a ton of vehicles and not just MB.

Don't wiggle it when it bottoms out, that's the plastic tip folding over and then you're going too far, it will come back out soaked and will appear overfilled. get it close then gently and slowly push it until it bottoms out without wiggling it.

either way, tw2 is at the rescue here with the measurement
