E55 vs E63 Biturbo 2012+

I was on my way home a couple nights ago and a 2014 E63 came flying by me. It was raining quite a bit so I didnt want to push my luck, but it got me thinking...how would the old 55k fair against the newer biturbo cars? Obviously stock for stock its no comparison and the newer biturbo cars would eat the 55 for breakfast, but my car currently has a 77mmUPD clutched pulley and a set of Longtubes going on soon and I’m wondering if thats enough to let me hang with the newer biturbo cars

does anybody have any experience or stories racing the biturbo cars on highway rolls? What was the outcome? What sort of mods did you have done? The newer e63’s make insane power...something like 620 @ the crank from the factory, but the older ones make around 575 if I’m not mistaken which is an achievable goal on an e55...

would love to hear your thoughts on this!

In for the discussion! My personal thought is a FBO 55 with slicks will beat a downpipe/tunes 63 on the track. An AWD 63 on the street has the advantage all day. Once mods become more abundant and cheaper other than just down pipes and a tune on the biturbo I think it will surpass the 55. The aftermarket performance scene for it just isn't big enough. I would love one though and will keep an eye out for one a few years from now when prices come down a little more.

No experience with them, just my 2 cents.

with downpipes/tune biturbo cars push out 600+whp and it is very rare to see a 600+whp e55 unless it is fitted with the weistec blower, i was thinking more of a stock 63 vs. a FBO 55 from a roll on the street because obviously from a dig the AWD 63s would eat us for breakfast

drothgeb 01-10-2019 04:30 PM

Yeah but HP aside, there are a couple of pages of FBO 55s in the 10s on drag times. There are like 5 early teen biturbos on there in the 10s, lots with tunes and/or exhausts in the 11s. FBO 55 vs stock biturbo would be easy 55 win IMO.

An aggressively tuned biturbo with downpipes will beat you every time on a highway pull. Drag strip is potentially other way around due to biturbos mct transmission killing your launch and what tires the 55 has.

Dammit, are you saying I've modded my E55 for nothing?:D

mondo 01-11-2019 12:43 AM

i had a couple of runs against C63 Bi-Turbos at a roll racing event in late 2017. they both beat me by about 2 car lengths over the 300m course. They were both brand new out of the showroom. my car is stock and had 25k miles on it at the time

I have a fbo e55 and downpipe/tune CLS63. The CLS63 feels much faster and puts down quit a bit more hp & tq. The reason you don't see too many biturbo cars quicker than mid to high 10's is due to the torque limiters built into the tcu which limit the power in the first couple gears not allowing the cars to really launch and get a good 60 foot.

can biturbo torque limiters be tune out to unlimit?

As far as I know its an on going issue. Renntech offers a tcu tune but there is really not enough proven info about it and then GAD motors which can do some crazy things but are super expensive and overseas. Another thing is after 800+ hp you will need to upgrade the transmission clutch packs and even then who knows how long those will last with the ridiculous torque numbers you will be putting out. Not enough product development on the m157 platform yet, though HPtuners is finally able to tune ECU through obd so maybe one day we can get tcu tuning.

BC928 01-11-2019 08:37 PM

What transmission is that?

pretty dishesrtening hearing this, but its expected...the e55 is an old platform now and I guess the top end of the biturbo cars is next level

slownrusty 01-12-2019 09:16 AM

What is FBO?

BlownV8 01-12-2019 11:05 AM

Full bolt on.

It's a ricer term used by millennials who are too lazy to list their mods. Not knowing is a good sign.

tw2 01-12-2019 09:13 PM

There will always be something faster. These cars are fast especially with a few mods. Just enjoy it and don't worry about the others.... unless you are tracking it but that usually requires deep pockets anyway.

Laughing..thank-you, as much as I keep up with the automotive scene, I had not heard of that acronym.

I have/had 55 and 63 biturbo at the same time and they are different animals. With your mods, you will hang with a stock biturbo and from a dig would do well against most lightly moded 63 BT but a heavy moded 63BT makes a lot of mph hour up top, so roll racing is harder. The 55 is more violently exciting and the turbo is smooth fast. :) Violently exciting is a feature that stays with you a loooong time:)

tscales 01-13-2019 05:11 PM

I have a 2017 C63S and a 2005 E55 Wagon. The C63S is easily as "violently exciting". Then again, I have the 4L, not the 5.4L so that probably helps. 503/516 vs. 469/516.

My C63S is a half second faster in the 1/8th. My best run in the C63S in the quarter, with minimal practice, is 11.9/119. My E55 can't touch that.

Just a little comparison.

thanks for the input, I think I will be done modding once I slap on the longtubes...the 55's been great to me. i'm only 22 so the price/performance ratio was a no brainer in buying this car glad to have new car performance with just some simple mods!

interesting, also you have a c63s cabrio which I'd assume is a lot slower than the coupe...

slape on in those Long Tubes and you really don’t care what Biturbos do/does cuz you be too busy enjoying the hell out your E55 SC with potential high to mid 10s in the quarter. And you don’t have to worry about voiding factory warranty when adding on more mods. :D

Interesting, are you by chance comparing an AWD C63s to an E55 on street tires or is that a RWD 63S on street tires also?? Tons of folks on here get in the 11s with slicks on a 100% stock E55.

we called it BPU back in the day. (early 00s)

austingtir 01-16-2019 12:23 AM

An aggressively tuned bi turbo is also a bit dodgy due to the rod and turbo manifold/flow designs.

I was originally going to buy one of the 5.5 bi turbos until I realised there are a few issues with that motor that are not easy or cheap to sort out. I think im going to wait for the 4.0 bi turbos to drop in price although I bet they arent perfect either.
