Just in case any one else wants an 82mm TB set up for $180

Got mine going today, works great, no hiccups (lucky me).
  1. $90 (optional, read post 2) - Buy the bolt on adapter plate from ebay. I used the make on offer on one listed for $110, and $90 was accepted. https://www.ebay.com/itm/E55-amg-m11...53.m1438.l2649
  2. $90 - Buy a used 82mm TB from ebay. Search for PN 2731410325 or 2781410025, or search SL550 or CLS550 throttle body. I prefer to look for folks that test stuff before hand and/or offer some amount of warranty period. The one I got was both tested and has 6 mo no questions asked return/replacement. https://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-Mercede...53.m1438.l2649
  3. Port match the SC snout. Pull the SC, remove the inter cooler, remove the snout. I had done this ages ago, last time I had the SC off I went ahead and opened the snout up. Use a flap sander chucked up in a drill. If you already have the adapter plate bolt it on, mark up the material that needs to come off, and make it happen.
  4. Couple of different options to get the stock intake on. I removed the 74mm gasket and used the same flap sander to open up the inside until it fit over the TB. You can also leave it completley alone, set it on top of the TB, then put a T bolt clamp over it. Or leave it alone, set it on top of the TB and use a silicone coupe over them both with clamps. What ever floats your boat, this really doesn't matter much. A side note here - at some point I'm going to fill the material up with resin then open the throat up to 82mm also. Just past the lip of the Y Pipe that you will sand to get on the TB it sinks all the way down to 74mm but there isn't any material outside of that to open it up. I can't help but laugh at the folks going through all the trouble to port match the SC snout and then leave pretty much the exact same size and length of restriction on the Y-Pipe.
  5. Put it together using gasket maker of your choice. I used high temp/sensor safe copper.
  6. If you had a stupid molded covver 74mm TB like I did, its a giant pain in the ass to recover your TB cable extension. Hopefully you don't have a molded one, if you do, good luck, I hope you figure out a better way to recover it than I did. I used a mix between razors, heated razors(solder iron attachment), dremmel, chizzle, and finally when frustration set in hammer and channel locks haha.I just ended up destroying the outer portion of the plug, lucked out that the actual plug part was undamaged so it's hooked up just no clips. I'll replace that later.
Anyways, just thought I'd share for any frugal ass DIYers like myself. Good luck.

Well apparently the adapter plates aren't even needed! You can just wallow out the holes in the 82mm TB and bolt it right up. Good info (not mine).

Excellent stuff here, thanks for sharing

so if you go this route do you still have to pull the SC off too ? or can the TB be swapped in place ?

You don't ever "need" to pull the SC off per say. But there is a restriction on the SC snout regardless so it's just more flow. It's literally the exact same size restriction that tons of people leave on the outlet of the Y pipe haha. I would recommend opening up the snout and the Y pipe.

Flow restrictions are cumulative though, you can upgrade the throttle body and Y pipe and leave the 1/4" long section of 74mm on the snout and it will still flow better than 3" long section of 74mm Y pipe, TB, and snout. Only thing I'd be a little worried about is if the actual airflow does something a little weird hitting that 74mm lip downstream of the TB, but probably not. You could always put the 82mm on and see of it feels. When ever you get a chance take the SC off and bore the snout. Replace all gaskets when reassembling.

anybody know if this would work for n/a m113 engines?

redc36 04-24-2019 11:00 AM

do you think maybe some sort of cap can be 3d printed to be placed inside the snout for boring to prevent particles from falling in?
how deep does it need to be bored inwards (width is 82mm but how deep does it go)?

It is only about 1/4" wide where it needs to be bored out. No good way to plug it because it opens up directly after. You might be able to do something with some tape but it would be a gamble.

I have an 80mm but need to do the pin swap. Need to find a harness and wiring picture somewhere.

redc36 04-26-2019 01:38 PM

which part number?

I know I've come across it here before. The quickest thing I see is:

The problem with porsch and audi tb is some don't have a hole or some have the hole in the wrong spot.

The oem 550 82mm tb has the breather in the same spot as the stock e55.

After I tapped that line behind the blade like the stock setup my tps went to 2.7% idle just like stock and no more codes.

Its nothing secret about it.iv had about 10 people pm me about there bosch tbs throwing codes.

I swapped pins 1 and 4 and 2 and 3 on my amg tb.

Look at how the stock e55 is setup and you will see why you get an idle to high code.its because of the oil vapor hose that needs to be behind the blade at idle.if you give that hose air the idle goes up like crazzy.try unpluging it on a stock car and watch your 4k idle lol

Use this search to dig around a bit more on the subject (I always use google instead of the forum search, much better): https://www.google.com/search?client...%3Ambworld.org

Good luck.
