Headlight options
Headlights. So the E55 essentially had modifications from the norm in certain areas, but the parts that were on the "normal cars" will normally fit. We know this from when we go to normal springs and shocks - the front a-arms are fine from the non amg cars, as are the rear lower steel arms (which - a bit of trivia - DO NOT BUY USED rear lower arms - they have a fluid filled joint in them....) I ave digressed -
Headlights.
E55
2118201761 (Left Example) ( Described as " eft ~ For cars with Bi-Xenon Headlights (Code 614). Includes control unit and Xenon bulb." )
BUT - we have options if we don't care about adjustable headlights. And the adjustable headlights are probably controlled by the sensors that you rip out when you go to Coilovers.
At least I did. I do not know if when you remove that option in STAR that it will continue to report the rear level to the ECU and control the front headlights. Maybe it will. Who knows. And who is left that WOULD know? Anyway.
Other headlights:
2118201761 Hella " For models with standard Bi-Xenon headlight assemblies (Code 614), not for models with Light Range Adjustment (Code 615), please verify prior to ordering. 1 per car. Limited availability."
2118200361 And Hella - Hallogen - "For models with standard Halogen headlight assemblies"

So as they go down in option, they get cheaper, and we are really just doing this to get clear headlights with bright, modern looking lights in them.
Ideas? What about putting LED bulbs in there?

Go hunting and eventually you’ll find a somewhat suitable bulb or just use a good set of night breakers or the super duper silverstars

LEDs in halogen projectors tend to be hit or miss. The major brands tend to sell led replacement bulbs that don’t scatter light in every possible direction but at a loss of output to the point it’s not really an upgrade over a standard halogen.

Beamtech makes a LED that works for facelift, but not pre. I have a pre and got the set off amazon but it scattered. The facelift projectors are slightly different (I believe clear as opposed to frosted--someone with more knowledge may have better info) and therefore the scatter is not an issue here
Sold them to a facelift-owning member here, and I am now digging around for a HID retrofit.
You say you own a pre-facelift, however, so those will most likely not work for you--leaving that up for anyone interested who owns an E63/facelift.
I am looking at a HID at Retrofitlab, a Dutch company. Here is their product for halogen pre-facelift. They get good reviews--just waiting for this whole thing to blow over before I take the plunge. It includes everything you'll need--projector+ballasts+bulbs, etc. with no errors.
Hope that helps--stay healthy.
