I agree that there are scams, but there is a 5% hold put on your credit car when you bid. If you win the auction you are charged 5% on your credit card. I don’t know too many who would walk away after having their card charged. I bought two Mercedes on BAT in the last year. 5% is a lot less than Mecum or RM.

Ironically I was interested in that car back when the Oakie owned it (Owner #2).
I’m much happier with my Designo Graphite E55 with 43k miles as it’s much better optioned and the color is nicer than black.
E55’s at this price & insanely low mileage are just getting silly.

Likely bid to the reserve by a shill bidder. Look at the top 3 bidder's histories, and tell me what you think.
Yep, I see what you are talking about. Those first few bidders are very questionable.

There are many ways to manipulate these blind auctions.
this exact scenario was brought up on a donut media youtube video regarding recent e30 m3 sales on BAT. i dont recall the exact video but i guess there's a lot of speculation out there whether these recent 250K sales are actually real or just speculators trying to boost the models value. a couple guys eating that $5k BAT fee in order to boost the value of their collection doesn't seem too far fetched

This is exactly what I'm talking about. Also a Jeep Grand Wagoneer just brought a record $70k. The two high bidders? Both registered this year, neither with any bids, sales, or comments previous to that auction.

I think your math is off. Last June I won the auction on BAT for a 2008 CLK63 Black Series. I won with a bid of $95,000 and was charged $4750 fee by BAT. I know that I wouldn’t have walked away after being charged the fee. I also won the auction for a CL600 and was charged a 5% fee on it as well.

5% of $100,000 is $5,000 not $250.

I suspected the bidding might stall at that early $40k bid. Love my E55, but to spend $40k there are newer, better options, do you agree? You can pick up a twin turbo AWD E63 for not much more. It probably won't be as reliable long term as an E55 is, but just as much, or more, fun.

I thought about making a bid,but didn’t. You are correct that an e63 is fun. I had a RENNtech tuned 2012 e63 AMG estate. It had 701hp and 829 tq. It was a whole lot of fun.
I don’t have anymore room in my garage at the moment. It will soon have an open bay as my 2002 Audi TT ALMS with 7400 miles on it will be on Bring a Trailer. It is as new and has never been wet.

Sometimes having a smaller garage is a good thing, it helps keep yourself under control
I was gonna stop after my 211 wagon (350) but then an ML63 showed up for a good deal, then, a clk430 for a steal. Must. Stop.
I have a detached 1800 sq ft garage. It takes some discipline, lol.

I know what you mean. I can only get six in my garage. I should start trimming down as it is getting harder and harder to take care of them. Being retired I have the time but sometimes not the health or energy.

Looking at some of his comments I think he had second thoughts about his bid. I know I wouldn’t have let it go for $250.

Holy crap! I can’t believe George let it slip away. But I guess he had a price in his head he wanted to pay and that was it!

Another scenario maybe he is a friend of the seller and bid $40,000 knowing that the reserve was $40,250. I have seen that happen before, but I came close to bidding on it at the end. I thought it could have gone to $45,000.

I spoke to the owner when it was on Hemmings and I was looking for another 06. He wanted over $50k for the car originally. Looks beautiful and The low mileage seemed great, but he didn’t even know when the oil was changed last. That was my walk away point personally. No thank you. Car is 16 years old and probably had the oil changed once or twice. Most people don’t realize the damage not changing the oil can cause in the long run - some engines can even seize completely. I’m not even going to get into all the maintenance items for sitting that long and not being driven.
