LED Lights for the W211

W211 Family,

Many of you have probably contemplated changing out the various incandescent lights on your E55/E63 to LEDs. I know that I have, well I finally decided to undertake this effort.
For years, my biggest complaint has been my HIDs which utilize the D1S bulb, they might have been great back in the day. But lighting technology has advanced since 2007.
On those very dark country roads, I have to use my high beams to see. Which blind the oncoming driver.

I also have a BMW X5M, and it utilizes LEDs for everything. The interior is so much brighter as compared to the E63, and the headlights are f**king awesome with never having to use high beams.

Anyway, I had a discussion with the owners Eddie and Emile at Benz Elite Automotive about it. I explained to Emile that the HIDs don't produced enough light to illuminate the roads ahead of me.
And this is the sole reason for me wanting to go LEDs. Emile was convinced that the HIDs would be superior, boy was he wrong. While Eddie was more open to the idea.
For those that don't know, HIDs bulbs dim as they get older. I have been replacing mine about every 2-3 yrs.

Eddie mentioned that he attempted to do this on his E55, but had flickering issues with his interior LEDs lights. He said that I might need resistors (noted).
Last Monday, I had my D1S HID headlight bulbs replaced with LEDs. What I major difference in light projection. But we had to remove my bumper to get them in.

I know that in most circumstances, the bumper doesn't need to come off. But to get these LEDs in and fully seated within the headlight unit, we had to take it off.
On my E63, the D1S bulbs have a black plastic ring, that fastens on to the bulbs then indexes on the headlight assembly and twist on to fasten.
We couldn't seem to index it correctly with the headlight on the car. We tried for 30 minutes, and decided to remove the headlights. Good call.

Once they were in, what a difference as compared to the HIDs. The D1S take between 3-5 seconds before the light is bright. The LED's are instance on.
Fast forward, I also purchased LEDs for the front and rear passenger footwells, the interior just lit up.
I also replaced the lights in the trunk I also order the LEDs for the license plate, dome lights and courtesy lights and I have the fog lights arriving today.

If you haven't replaced these old incandescent lights, do yourself a favor and pull the trigger. You will thank yourself afterwards.
I almost forgot, I have had to utilize any resistors

Recap: I have replaced headlights, interior foot well lights, trunk lights. And will replaced courtesy lights, dome lights along with license plate lights. And last but not least fog lights.

I will post pictures when all in completed, but for those interested here is the website: https://www.superbrightleds.com/vehicle
If you don't see the light you need give them a call. As the site doesn't list every light for your vehicle.

Yes, the E55 utilizes the D2S bulb while the E63 uses the D1S bulb, which is a totally different setup altogether. I'm very happy with the light output.

I just finished installing the LED Fog Lights, and they flickered off & on. Which tells me that they need a resistor, but since I don't want to cut or tap into the wiring, I will just return the lights for a refund.
I guess Eddie was right after all, which is a bummer. Everything was looking so promising too.

I will take my Morimoto swapped projectors with Osram CBB D2S setup over anything else including LED.

Below is my G wagon with led vs my above E setup. Hard to tell the diff but the G is on the left and E on right

I received my LED license plate bulbs the other day. I installed them only to find that they are flickering, just like the other LEDs I purchased.
Man, I have no luck with these things. So, I sent them back for a refund. I have truly given up all hope on these LED's.
The only LED that I was able to utilize thus far, has been the headlights, trunk lights and the interior foot well lights.

I have all mine converted to led including the front turn signals. When you have an error or flicker it’s of course bc if the CAN voltage being off. You have 2 options a resistor wired inline or for some spots I wire inline a 194 bulb. The trunk lights are a PITA and I have never found a working solution for MB cars with the exception being the Gwagon.

these and a basic 194 bulb will solve the license light issue or again get a resistor. I have used resistors for the front turn signal but that involves opening the headlight. Least that’s how I did them.

I know the solution is a resistor. But, I didn't want to cut/tap/splice wires. I was hoping that these LED's came with a built in resistor, but no such luck.
My new D1S LED bulbs work great, and so does the LED's for the trunk. I found a small glitch with the footwell lights, for the most part they work, some flickering can be tolerated.

What, I truly wanted was just the headlights, trunk, license plate, interior lights and fog lights. But only the headlights and trunk truly work as designed.
I found out that the dome lights and courtesy lights use a peanut bulbs. No the LED's that I purchased.
So, I will just live with what I have for now. Might examine this issue again in the future.

But thank you for the advice. Much appreciated.

For the license plate lights. I’m running these bulbs on my e55, they work just fine and no flickering. (39mm variant) https://a.co/d/hhMWK50

Update: Yesterday, I placed an order for error free Can Bus LED Fog Lights, that just arrived from Amazon today. I've also order error free interior footwell and license plate LEDs that will arrive on Saturday.
My plan is to send the flickering LEDs back for a refund, once I have the new LEDs installed. After ensuring I do not have any issues with the new ones. If they work without issues, then the last item on the list is the dome/courtesy lights.

My LEDs actually put out more lumens than the D1S HID bulbs. HID get dimmer as they age. Compared to LED that stay bright from day one.

Well, the ones that you recommended for the license plate worked. No flickering issue whatsoever. I pulled out the flickering interior footwell lights and sent them back to Super Bright LED for a refund.
And placed another order for 39mm LED's from Amazon. The H11 LED Fog Lights, that I ordered from Amazon did work but wouldn't seat securely inside the fog light housing.
They were returned for a refund, so I ordered H7 which is the light head, and not the entire plug and bulb, and are can bus error free. Both the interior light and fog lights are due to arrive today.
Can't wait to put them in and see.

Is it difficult to get to the bulb on the fog lights to switch them out? Could you add the link to whic one's you ordered here please. I hate that the oem one's are that pale yellow color compared to the headlights. Thanks

On my E63 changing out fog lights bulbs is quite easy. The fog lights have a plastic cover with three torx screws andthe fog light housing has four torx screws, and then the electrical connector. And that’s it. I will add a link for the Amazon lights when I have installed them, and ensured that there are no issues.

Well, I installed the LED Fog Lights and you guest it….issues. Flickering on and off, which tells me they require a resistor. I’m unwilling to go this route as it would require, tapping/splicing wires. But the interior footwell LED lights worked. So, to date the headlights, trunk, license plate and interior footwell lights work. I’m abandoning the whole fog lights upgrade. Not worth the hassle or aggravation.

fogs require a resistor...i've been running ebay specials for years. its just another harness with connectors that plugs in line. i'm only running low voltage bulbs though and not full wattage bulbs.

It's funny that you mentioned this. As I just placed an order for LED Fog Lights along with resistors. I think that this time, it will work.
What are you running for interior footwell lights? Since these lights are located under the dash, and the back of the drivers and passenger seats.
I replaced the 6418 bulbs with LEDs, but they are flickering. And I really don't want to cut any wires under the dash or the seats.
Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
