COMAND doesn't know when engine is on or off, Navigation has no signal
 

All these problems started after my battery died. It ended up being the seat module draining the battery. The mechanic who found seat module drain said I probably zapped some modules since I jump started the car once or twice since the battery died, but he's too lazy to diagnose these issues for me. Also, he's not as smart as I thought he was either, because he thought it might just be a menu option.

- The radio/stereo/head unit doesn't turn off after removing key from ignition and opening the door. Even after closing the door and locking the car, it still doesn't turn off.

- When driving with head unit on, after a while, it says "Please start the engine. Otherwise COMAND will switch off in 3 minutes." Then again right before it shuts off, it gives a similar message but with a 10 second warning. I can turn it back on, and then it will work for a while again before getting the message.

- Trouble code: Communication interference with the control module "Audio Gateway" via interior CAN bus. (Not sure if this was there before all these issues, since I never had any problems with the car, I never bothered to scan it before.) My scanner also cannot communicate with the Audio Gateway module. I tried 3 different used AGW because I thought that was causing my battery drain, and they all were unable to communicate, so I don't think it's the AGW itself.

- Navigation gets no reception. It will load the map screen, but it's getting no reception, so it doesn't show where I am, and it's stuck on a location I was never at, although it is in my city.

- Tel and Audio shows "------------" on the instrument cluster menu. Steering wheel controls don't work anymore, for instance the volume control. Before, they worked.

I'm not sure if all the issues are related, they just all happened after the whole battery drain fiasco. I do believe the mechanic is right in that I could have zapped and ruined multiple modules by jumping the battery.

Any ideas?

I change the fuse 322 (comand center / screen) and WORKS !!! is the yellow one up left on the passenger side FUSE BOX.

Im suspicius about it because the fuse I replace was GOOD so my thesis is just REMOVE the 322 fuse and put it again (for a HARD CONSOLE RESET) , probably this works either.

It’s so ironic you asked. The problem just came back earlier this week!! My car has been sitting about 6 months, barely driving it, only warming it up here and there. And maybe drove it once for 3 hours one day in those last 6 months.
The only new thing is that the navigation still works all the time, so I guess that was somewhat unrelated.

I never changed the fuse or did anything. The way I fixed it a few months after I posted this, I took it on a 1.5 hour drive to a more sunny and hot climate (around 90 degrees). On the way there it gradually gets hotter around 80-90 degrees. By the time I had got to my destination, the radio wasn’t turning off anymore. And then it just worked since then!
So I’m thinking it has to do with condensation or moisture maybe? I noticed in the left corner where windshield meets trunk, water pools up especially when parked downhill. And then some moisture sometimes makes it way down into the trunk floor towards the area where the amp is and all the other electronics there.
Another problem I’ve been having on and off is the third brake light and license plate lights sometimes don’t work. That problem started one day when I accidentally closed the trunk manually in a rush instead of using the trunk close button, so I’m guessing the wiring might be frayed.
I’m gonna take apart the left side of the trunk one day when I have time and check all the wiring and check for moisture

Update:
Radio doesn't turn on at all anymore. It shows the start up screen but then turns off.

- No moisture was in the trunk area.
- I fixed all the trunk wiring that was frayed, and now all my lights work and the trunk opens and closes with all methods (driver door, trunk close button, the handle, and remote).
- Fuses are all fine, none are thin Chinese ones, they are all thick and in good condition.

I tried bypassing CD changer, the navigation unit, and the 2 trunk modules, with the fiber optic bypass connector I have. None of them seemed to be the problem. I could see the red fiber optic light at each module when I was connecting the fiberoptic bypass. However, when I do the MOST wakeup test with my scanner, it only recognizes the Audio Gateway. It doesn't recognize the CD changer, navigation unit, or even the head unit. The audio gateway module (amp) wouldn't fit into my fiber optic bypass connector, so didn't try that. I swapped the radio head unit with another known good one and that didn't fix it.
Codes present:
D146 No or incorrect CAN message from control unit CE04 (Central Gateway control unit)
9386 Communication disturbance with control unit AGW via interior CAN bus.

CAN Hi and CAN Lo at the OBD port are measuring 2.5V with key off and with key on. I found a map of the interior CAN bus network. I went to each CAN bus connector bar (1 driver rocker area, 1 driver kick panel, 1 passenger kick panel, 1 passenger under dash, and 1 at the Rear SAM), and disconnected each connector one by one with key on. None of them had any effect on the voltage. CAN Hi and CAN Lo remained at 2.5V the whole time.

Any ideas?

i have ONE idea.

When the wiring frayed and the headunit lost communication, it might have triggered the antitheft system of the headunit. Now in the NTG5.5 and up. it displays that it has been activated. In the older models, you might need something similiar to DTS Monaco/Vediamo to see if it infact did trigger.

Hi I found the issue, please check the canbus wiring to the agw, all fixed now, no warning, cd changer works, steering wheel button works all fine after soldering
