PLEASE help with P0341 code (2008 E63)

Hi everyone,

I hope I can get some ideas from the group here as to what could be causing the CEL with the P0341 code (B6/5 Right intake camshaft Hall sensor – The alternation frequency of the signal value is implausible) along with some random misfire codes on the same bank.

Here is a little backstory. I recently replaced the intake camshaft on Bank 1 along with all the lifters and also replaced the headbolts while in there. I followed the proper instructions on setting the timing but with this being my first time doing this job, I wonder if I may have messed something up along the way.

I did use the timing tool kit and all 3 were fitted the way the way they were supposed to.

I replaced both sensors on the adjuster cover on that bank and did notice a good amount of oil in one of the plugs, which I believe got there during the job (versus a previous leak). I cleaned up the plugs and even cut open the sleeve a bit further up to see how far the oil has traveled and believe that everything is clean now. However, the CEL remains but keeps going in and out. Car starts with no issues but the CEO comes on. One minute it flashes, then it goes away before coming back.

I did follow the cable into the ECU and didn’t see any signs of oil so I’m thinking maybe I wasn’t exactly at 40 degrees when I put back the camshaft and should open up that side and set the timing again. Any thoughts, ideas would be greatly appreciated.

If you replaced the Intake Hall Sensors located on the Front Cam Cover, then your issue “may” be related to the Camshaft Adjuster itself. Especially if someone took it apart and inadvertently put it back together backwards by reversing the position of the internal Cog, which would cause for the position of the spring loaded barrel, that normally faces forward towards the Hall Sensor, to be facing rearward towards the Cam. By the way, this would mean that the Diamond Washer, which “normally” is sandwiched in between the Cam Adjuster and the Cam, actually would have no contact because the opening on that side of the Cam Adjuster Cog is smaller ( as the Cam Bolt is smaller than the end of the Camshaft itself!) and thus the Cam Adjuster without its Teeth being lined up with the Gear/Sprocket below would wobble if NOT for the Bolt forcing the two Un-mated surfaces together as well as whatever contact below it has with the teeth of the Gear/Sprocket! Ask me how I know! If you take the Front Cam Cover off and see that the Cam Adjusters teeth is drawn towards the front and don’t line up perfectly with the drive gear below ( this drive gear drives both Cam Adjusters), then you know the internals of the Cam Adjusters were installed backwards! And if this is the case, then you will realize you have perhaps avoided catastrophic failure by double checking this immediately! This could definitely be a cause for your “New” Hall Sensor reading being “implausible”.
