What cars would you consider replacing the E55 with?

Unfortunately other than the headers there isn't too much worth taking and putting into another great condition E55. I will still ask for a buy back value anyway. I have one of two valuations back and so far well above what insurance was offering.
Check your regulations for details on the "totaling of the car". If the accident is severe and there is structural damage, here is consider salvage and longer driveable; however, if it "insurance totaled" because "not worth fixing" but w/o structural damage is NOT salvage; therefore, it is still repairable. Each country has its variations on this.

Also, there is the chanxe the car is worth "parting out", so you buy it back, part it out and collect even more --> Better down payment for a low mileage Exx

Sorry to hear the bad news. The motor and transmission alone are valuable. Maybe even worth shipping overseas.
Worth a thought. Fewer and fewer of these puppies available...I keep a spare lower mileage M113 E55 motor with its 722.6 transmission in my environmentally controlled garage for my W210 E55. Now trying to figure out how I could do the same for my W211.

I hear you; the whole thing is a real shame. If the buy back is cheap I will grab it. I don't have a lot of room at home so would probably have to remove everything valuable in a couple of weeks and get rid of the rest. What is worth taking? Engine, trans, ECU, engine loom, rear airmatic struts (front will be damaged), I would probably grab the merlot interior - door cards, seats, brakes, exhaust... probably about it?

Keep the f-king thing, man, you’re gonna kick yourself if you get rid of it. Ask me how I know…

Just the complete raw character of this car gets me every time I drive it. It’s just awesome. You can’t say that about too many cars, you really can’t.

Been joyriding it like a maniac. I'd avoid those 6.3s like the plague unless you're buying one brand new. Just my opinion. You do you, obviously and good luck with your search!

I hear you. I have noticed over the years people leaving the platform and coming back. I had considered it a few times also, mainly when the transmission annoys me but thought better of it. I only just replaced some suspension parts and did the rear main seal last year so glad I can continue to benefit from all that going forward. To celebrate its return I will finish off the suspension, replace the spark plugs, cabin filter and get it ceramic coated as the last coating was 5 years ago. I have said to the panel beater I will pay to get the remaining undamaged wheels resprayed (paint flaking) with the one scuffed in the accident.

Sorry to see you went through something similar. Looks like mine should be repaired now. I have given the go ahead to insurace, it just depends on whether the panel beater can get hold of the parts car they quoted from. So hopefully I won't need a new car for a long time to come.

All of the new cars have issues. I have been looking at M156, M157, M177 and M139 cars and they all seem to have possible major flaws. I noticed that the M177 cars eat coil packs for breakfast but there are none available anywhere to buy, every site has discontinued, crazy and the engines look very hard to work on. M157 looks ok if you leave them alone and don't modify them. M156 actually look like the best of the bunch to me if you are happy to do all the preventative work, cams, lifters, manifold, adjusters, head bolts, injectors but still a lot of up front work and cost. I am very happy to stay with the M113K.

Update- car is repaired! Mostly... I got it back a few days ago but took it back again the next day. Exterior looks pretty amazing, paintwork and panel gaps were excellent in general. I also had them repaint all four wheels- I wanted to go aftermarket but the stress and cost of finding the right size wheels and tires that are actually available while avoiding rubbing, this was easier and they look great.

Just a bunch of small things that need adjusting- the hood doesn't open or close properly without a lot of force, a broken plastic tab, left fender (undamaged side) is still slightly popped out of alignment with the door etc. And it gained some new scratches around the tow hook cover on the rear bumper which I know wasn't there beforehand and the tow driver drove the car on forwards and secured the wheels so that didn't cause it either. Will post some pictures when it is back for good.
