*** Warning: OBDII Accessory ***

Just wanted to post a warning for now until I can re-verify what I have found.

Since having my Autotap I have been using it in the car to create logs of different driving sessions. A few times where I have gone on longer drives and had the unit running for 20min or more I have noticed a "Warning: SRS malfunction. Visit garage immediately." message come up on the dashboard.

This has happened twice now while driving with the OBDII plug connected using Autotap. On both occassions (2 different days) I immediately pulled over to the side of the road, unplugged the OBDII connector, turned off the car, and then restarted. I drove for an additional 30min - 60min and the message did not reappear.

I have a feeling that keeping an OBDII accessory plugged in for any length of time has an ill-effect on the communications that are happening within the vehicle.

I am hoping Marcus or Gunite can chime in and let me know if they have noticed this happen with their OBDII accessories.

vrus,

No problem so far, have 3 30+ minute drives logged on mine...

I've been logging data via Car Chip EX for the past 3 days (mostly 4-5 hr sessions), no sign of malfunctions.

ok.. I guess that most likely means that there is something wrong with my car only... I will keep using it for another couple of weeks and see if it keeps reproducing itself.

I drove the car all day today without Autotap plugged in and I didnt get that SRS message coming up, so I know my SRS has to be ok.

vrus,

Remember, these OBDII ports are meant to be tapped into at anytime... I find it highly suspicious that it would trigger an SRS malfunction... but with the electronics in this car I guess anything is possible.

Victor,

The malfunction and warning you are seeing is the exact reason I had my car in for service the other day. All they had to do was replace a sensor inside the seatbelt clip so they say. This error code and the car chip being plugged in are unrelated because I began data logging weeks after I saw the code. Have fun dropping your car off for service and let us know what you find.

What's strange though is that the message only comes up after having the OBDII scan running for a while. It has never come on when I am driving my car without doing the data logging.

What was it?? Mine just had the SRS light come on and I'm scared.

vrus 08-31-2005 11:30 PM

Its never come back again.. ONly happens SOMETIMES during an OBDII scan.

Thanks dude. My light has been on for three days. We'll see what MB says.

It could be the sensor that is in the seatbelt latching mechanism.

jangy 08-31-2005 11:38 PM

it looks like it could be one of many sensors. I just hope it is one that is easily accessed.
