Shift knob removal

1 Attachment(s)
I have 2010 E63 and decided to replace the shift knob to new (2012) version with AMG logo.

How can I remove the old shift knob? Do I just pull it out hard?

For people who have done this mod before, is it a simple direct bolt-on? or does it require any modification?

I don't wanna break anything, so any input is appreciated.

Thanks!

The new shift knob does look cooler. I'm not planning to replace mine, but I'm interested in what it takes to replace it. It shouldn't be that difficult.

looks like u will probably have to remove the center pieces and im sure its probably a screw or nut that holds it in ....thats how it was when i switched out my w126 shift knob....probably very similar :)

hmm.. thing is, the new knob (2012) looks like it's a simple push-in click type. it came with no hardware to put it together.

I'd like to do this mod to my 2011 E63. any help here would be great!

It pulls off, but not easily.
Old knob has same retaining clip as new one.
I could not do it and had my dealer do it on my service visit.

Looks good when done.
Its an expensive knob though.

when you get a chance, could you upload a pic?

How much is the knob?

The old knob gets trashed on removal.
The stem is now cracked on mine and the clip appears to have lost it's teeth.
It was never intended to be removed and should not have to be unless the transmission selector switch went bad.
IF you think it would help you, I'll send you the old knob.

I think it looks nice on the '10 as it matches well with the metal finish of the switch plate. It only looks so bronze because of the flash.

The last 4 digits of the part number are to match the leather color to the leather strip in the switch panel. Black in my case. However, some people have gray, tan etc.

cool thread, I am intersted in using a skateboard wheel as a gear knob......so I can remember that i used to be able to skate LOL

sehyang82 12-16-2012 11:23 PM

It is done. It takes quite a bit of force to pull it out, but it does. Afterall, it's a simple pull-out, push-in procedure.
It looks great though. :D

im gonna core out an 8 ball and use that instead

otakki 12-17-2012 04:30 PM

Besides looking cooler with the AMG logo at the top, another two things I like about the new shift lever is the top being flat and the overall height being shorter...I think.

Am I right about the new one being shorter?

bmellion 12-17-2012 04:43 PM

Does anyone have the part # for the same knob but beige in color???

acey 02-23-2013 12:33 PM

Just to confirm. Is it just to pull straight up? One fast pull or more of a progressive pull to get it out? Just got mine, and don't want to risk anything.

Sorry about the bump.

cant find this part anywhere :'(

Bump anyone? Seems to be stuck like hell. I'm worried about doing any damage to the lever itself. Is there any way to "ease" the knob for easier removal? Or am I just not pulling hard enough? Will the old one break during removal?

Thanks!

uclachan 02-28-2013 10:49 AM

lunarx said the old one get trashed. not sure "trashed " means break or busted.
seems like it's really hard to remove the knob. but it's do-able =) good luck and if you pull it, let us know~

Don't worry about the damage to the lever. Just pull the ***** out of it and it will just pop out. I was actually a little worried of breaking the room mirror if the knob suddenly pops out and I put too much force so that I wouldn't be able to stop my elbow to hit the room mirror, but it all went well.

My old knob didn't break either, but didn't care anyway since it's going to be trashed.

Just bite the bullet and pull the crap out of it.

Thanks guys.

Just had a few moments to spare during the weekend and the swap was a 45 second job. It pulled out in one piece and the new one slotted in easily. Attached a very bad pic.

Love the cabin now!

Looks good! Everyone must have forgotten about the question I had posted higher up on the thread so I'm gonna ask again...Is the new one shorter?

By the way, what year is your car? Based on your steering wheel, it looks like a '12+. I thought all those cars already have the new shifter knob. I like the perforated leather on the steering wheel. I always worry the alcantara on my wheel is going to sheer off one of these days.

vdubpower 03-31-2013 06:24 PM

yeah, 2012 wheel, but center color is not 2012
