2014 non-ceramic e63 pad question

My wagon has a hard build date of May 6th so I anticipate seeing it sometime after that, been almost 6 mo. I was thinking about changing the pads prior to putting any miles on the car to keep down the dust. I know mercedes, audi, bmw all use very soft OEM pads that create a ton of dust. if I can move to something without hurting the rotors and come out with less dust I would jump at it. Does anyone have experience with any of the aftermarket pads out there, or is it better to stay with the OEM pads and wash the wheels every week?

I'm no expert but having done this process in jan-february this is the time frame we are looking at. Car will sit at port for 7-14 days before getting on a 13 day boat ride to Halifax (where are you located?) and another 7-21 days to dealer depending where you are. My planned delivery date is june 26th. Your dealer should have that info in the system. My first order got build on jan 15th and got on boat on feb 1st and arrived to port on feb 16th (3 days later then planned date due to bad weather). Then the bad news hit that car was dammaged but delivery was planned for march 1st.

So count arround 6-7 weeks after build date to get into car...

On the Wallenius Wilhelmsen website you can see the boat schedule by port and figuring out which boats are leaving arround the build date... I'm hoping to get on Independence II on the 20th! Your dealer will also have boat name once it gets loaded.

If your brakes aren't creating dust by consuming brake pad materials, then what are they doing?

Yes, this is a rhetorical question.

The friction is going to wear on either the pad or the rotor. Your choice on which is preferable....

Ask the people who sell "low dust" or "dust free" brake pads to cover your rotor replacements should it become necessary prematurely.

Good point... Pads are way cheeper than rotors.

there is usually a nice trade off of greatly reduced dust without the rotor wear. on my 930 I run non oem pads and have had no problems for 10+ years. the pagid race pads that we have used in the past do not create the OEM dust and work very well at talking care of the rotors.

I stopped using Pagid on my track car. Couldn't keep the transfer layer on the rotors. No matter the pad material. Especially with the blacks. Also found that they consumed more rotor material than other pads. Switched to Carbotech and its dustville, but the transfer layer is consistent and the rotors aren't seeing much wear.

It is a tradeoff. OE rotors for the MB are $1000 per. They're under $240 per axle on my track car.

Take a look at Akebono and EBC for ceramic pads for your standard steel brakes. I've got it on the front axle on my W208 and W251 and am happy so far.

Are there decent aftermarket rotors for the car? Pads?

I've got the caliper tools from years of brake changes across almost every brand... I haven't encountered a brake job I cant do at home. Am I about to run into a $1000/rotor scenario? I don't think I've paid more than $300 for even exotic non-ceramic stuff.

Brake dust is a combination of materials used and the bonding process that is used to adhere all the materials together. Just because a pad makes less dust does NOT mean that the rotor must be wearing more. If that was the case it wouldn't be a dust free pad because you would create more dust from the rotor material being removed.

There are brake pads that will wear out your rotors quickly and those are usually a racing type pad that was incorrectly sold to someone as a street pad.

As for the newer AMG's I believe that we are the only company offering a brake pad for these cars right now. EBC is advertising the same pad for the 2009-2013 but the pads changed in 2012. The pads from the non turbo AMG cars are different now and I think that you will find the factory brake pads for these newer cars to be very pricey as well.

If you want a low dust pad that performs and is quiet for your new E63 then I do have a solution for you.

The RADO pads sound great, but if I read right, they are even more than factory pads...($495F/$395R)

The factory pad is cheaper but it is still n expensive pad. I believe the fronts are around $400.00 and the rears are about $350.00. If you are satisfied with the performance of the stock pad and the mess that they leave behind then their is really no need to change it.

I would hope that if you have an AMG you would only want to improve your brakes and not look for a pad that is cheaper and a downgrade from the factory pads.
