DIY - Air Filter, M156

Hey Guys,

Planning on saving a couple of bucks with DIY air filter. I used to do it on my former 2000 E55 with ease.

Anything I need to know or watch out for?

I found the set of 2 filters on Autohauz for only $15. That seems wrong to me (as in too low) Made by Mann.

Anyway, I am about to have a few things done by the dealer including a trans service, so I figured I would do the easy stuff. Already did the cabin filter!

A preferred brand of air filter? Just stick with OEM?

Thanks

FF. W212 E63 M156 non-pano 18" P2 ParkT NightV (gone but will be missed).
IMO, I would just stick with oem. BTW, any helpful tips to make changing the cabin filter less PITA?

I just actually looked under the hood briefly in my work parking lot, and it looks like it is as easy as removing the 3 Torx screws on each of the silver covers. Is this all there is to it?

Remove those screws, lift up while gently flexing the back air tube and pull out old filters and replace? Put screws back in and done?

Yes, it is very easy to do just as you've described it. A couple of considerations for your M156 though. ROW air boxes can be picked up relatively cheaply if you shop around. ROW air boxes have better airflow based on their design. They also delete charcoal filters.

Whether you do that or not, I would look at high flow filters over stock and do the charcoal filter delete. I purchased afe filters from Amazon
Amazon.com: aFe 31-10154 Air Filter: Automotive Amazon.com: aFe 31-10154 Air Filter: Automotive

They are more expensive than stock but they will last for a lifetime, you can simply pull them out and clean them anytime and just put them back in. My engine ran more smoothly after I did this, was more responsive and also got a bit better mileage.

Hey, thanks man!

Your post has my interest. Does this change the covers too? Does everything look the same after? What about warranty impact?

And I should probably know this, but where are the charcoal filters?

Thanks for your time.

Cheers.

OK,

So I just found the ROW kit for about $400. I see it is a different enclosure. Larger for more flow. I also see it has new MAF sensors with it. Wondering if this might mess up my Uerocharged Performance tune. I can call those guys and ask them.

Last question is: assuming you installed it yourself, how long does it take? Easy peasy? No?

Still a bit worried though about bs extended warranty implications if noticed. As in "oh, you have this engine problem because you modified the air intake" stupid of course. But wouldnt put it past them.

Thanks

Have a look in the classifieds on this forum, you can find them a bit cheaper (or there were a couple available a while back). I just had my car emission tested (Ontario, Canada) and it passed without any issues. They are OEM, so look exactly the same but were designed for outside of North America. The Charcoal filters sit in the top of the existing air box, you have to pull/slide them out. I kept mine in case they were required for the emission test, but ended up not needing them.

I am far from an expert, but if you went to the Weistec site they suggest the ROW airboxes will actually help optimize the tune as you are getting better airflow into the engine. You should check with eurocharged directly though. I would suspect they would encourage this and likely also sell the ROW Airboxes to complement their tune.

Total time to install was less then 20 minutes start to finish, no special tools required.

Here is a picture with the new Airbox installed. You'll note a difference in colour but that is from the previous owner having rust proofed the engine bay without covering the engine, so my existing covers are covered with goop which I can't remove.

Thanks a lot for the well detailed response! Very informative. I will surely look into this. First I will be giving a call to Eurocharged to verify no issues with my v5 tune.

Thanks Again.
