What is the deal with CLS63 AMG being Faster in the 1/4 than the E63?
Hey Guys,
I been out of the game a long time, but Im in the market for another car. Maybe a Mercedes again. I noticed on Drag Times that the CLS63 AMG cars are more in the 10s than the E63 AMG cars. Is there any reason, what am I missing? I know the CLS63 is a rear wheel drive car, I was leaning towards the newer CLS63 with 4 matic.
I like the E63AMG but seems like people are stuck in low 11 passes in these.
Thanks
KAMIL

2014 E63s amg 4matic, 2009 C63, 2006 E55 AMG , 2001.5 AUDI S4 stg 3+ w/meth
there are only 2 cls63's on dragtimes that are in the 10's that dont have upgraded turbos or that arent at yas marina track in UAE that has suspicously high times (a e63 ran 10.12 there and sl63 ran 10.01 there)
so basically there are 2 tuned stock turbo cls63s vs 1 tuned stock turbo e63 in the 10's on dragtimes

ORRR think of it this way, when you're out and you see a hot rear end on a lady, do you:
A: Pass it and never see it again.
B: Slow down and enjoy the view as it sways past for owww a little bit longer
The CLS is the lady with the rear...There you have your answer, Those pesky E's just can't get enough of it

Consider that MB could be tuning the CLS63s to be faster since it is definitely a sportier vehicle, at least from their branding perspective. CLS63 is sold as a COUPE, E63 is sold as a sedan - buyers inherently expect more from the former, and MB delivers in that regard. There is also a major difference in the body shape and aerodynamics (aside: is CLS63 lower?) although I am not sure how much of a role that plays.
But if you browse the MB site and model information, the CLS has lower, faster times for 0-60, etc. The disparity is occurring from the factory.

Well put
I wonder if it's the same deal as the E55 being faster than the CLS55, SL55 etc.
I had my CLS63 EC tuned even before I had it registered lol. Would love to find a tuned rwd Bi-turbo E63 to run while the asphalt still grips.

Virtually identical times. The E63 S actually has a .1s quicker ET in the 1/4 mile but the CLS63 S has an almost 1 mph higher trap speed. That is a statistical dead heat. You would need to do much more sampling to definitively say one is quicker or faster than the other.
