If it was "normal" we would all have that sound. I certainly don't.....

I had several M3's in the past. In my 95, I had a weird vibration between about 1K and 2K rpm. I took it to two different dealers and the car spent a total of three weeks in the shop. It was even a "special case" that a master tech from Germany tore apart. They found nothing and said it was "normal". I then took it to an independent shop that was highly recommended. He literally identified the issue within 5 seconds of observing it.

Moral of the story: Don't accept that it is "normal" when we all know it is not. Try another dealer, etc. Just because one tech can't figure it out doesn't mean it is "normal".

Just curious, what was the cause of the vibration?

It’s a hanger bearing that needs to be shimmed. I will get a TSB on Monday. It’s definitely not normal! And it only happens when the car is cold.

The E36 M3's had a dual mass flywheel. Apparently some of the internal components failed (probably one/some of the springs). The flywheel was replaced, which solved the issue.

Yes please post TSB number. I've been unsuccessful in finding one pertinent to this and my car goes back Tuesday for them to take clearance measurements. Would love to have something for them to reference.

For what it is worth, I have the same noise on my CLS63 and looking to take it in, so it seems it is not unique to E class. Would love to hear if there is a TSB

Will see how things sound in the morning, but shop installed some shims under the bearing hanger as per direction from MB.

Good day everyone,

I have a problem with my 2016 E63S AMG and I'm really hoping there's someone on this forum that can lend a hand.

My car has 10k KM's and has made a clicking sound since new, but has gotten progressively worse as the car was broken in. This clicking sound is very noticeable in the cabin. It only comes about between 40km/h and 60km/h, only when accelerating normally. Off the gas - no clicking. Not between 40km/hr-60km/hr - no clicking.

I've uploaded a couple of cell phone videos to youtube. You might have to turn up the volume a bit, but you can definitely hear the clicking clearly. Here's the links:

Honestly, the most frustrating thing is my Mercedes dealership and how I'm getting dicked around. They had the car in, didn't find anything, and I haven't got a response back after a couple of additional inquiries. Very frustrating. You'd figure I'd be getting better service considering I spent $125k on this car.

I figure before I inquire with them any further I'd throw this out on this forum and it's user base to see if anyone has any type of insight that might be able to help me out. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
Marshall
It's in the front grill. I had the same problem and the dealer packed behind the front grill with foam insulation. the clicking or jingling went away.

After a quick stop at the dealer yesterday, where they installed a shim on the hanger bearing, my noise was not present this morning. Looks like it may be fixed. I've asked the dealership to provide some more detail on to what was happening and will report back.

Agreed.

Some additional details. Shop notes state "INSTALL 2.5MM SHIMS AT DRIVESHAFT HANGAR BEARING"

Here’s the scoop. There’s no TSB for the clicking noise some of us are experiencing because apparently in some cases is considered normal. The cause of the clicking is that the hanger bearing is sitting a couple of mm higher. Supposedly as break in period and wear takes place, the bearings’ rubber ring will sag and the clicking will be gone. Hence the reason why it’s outdoor temperature dependent, cold - clicks and warm- it doesn’t. The cure are two 2mm shims.

Thank god I found this thread. (Should be a sticky)
My cls63 also have this exact same noise, and it only happens when the car is cold.
Now I plan to visit the dealership again and show them this thread so they can resolve the problem..

Got this fixed. All they needed to do was shim the driveshaft so it levels out. It's a common issue on the GL/GLS because of the weight of the car, but not so much on the heavier sedans.

This continues to plague my car after 3 visits to the dealer; Murphy’s Law dictates the noise isn’t present when I’m dealer either the foreman. Any updates from anyone?

You'll need to leave the car with them over night and then return and be present when the do a cold start and do a test drive. I was fortunate that the foreman was willing to work with me. He listened to the video and asked for a sound clip which they sent off.

The gf noticed this sound in my car as well the other day. Same situation, cold starts and speed dependent. I assumed it was a hard drive getting up to speed, looks like I'm booking a service appointment! Thanks Mb forum!

After reading this thread I noticed this same clicking noise. Only happens in the morning when cold and cruising between 55-65 Kms.

Will need to to bring it in.

Everyone should check their cars.

Quick update, took the car in to my local dealer and left it with them, they were able to recreate the noise up on the lift after it sitting outside overnight. For the record, the noise has been much less noticeable since the weather has improved as of late.

I suggested the shim fix, but they are insisting on replacing the driveshaft, not sure if that includes the bearing assembly. Will continue to update after the parts arrive and the work is completed.
