2014 E63S; AMS 100 octane ecu tune; edok tcu tune; BB intakes; dyno tuned
So different ... the two cars...
one is brute speed and somewhat harsh ride and the other is soft and luxurious and basically a boat compared to the amg. One is loud and proud of it and the other is whisper quiet; the coupe has state of the art interior and tech if that's important to you and the e63S is outdated, I think the coupe looks overweight
i like the loud harsh brute with old tech

I made my comment simply because usually these questions occur prior to buying a car - where as you seem to already own the E63.
To answer your question. Given my growing family I'd probably take the S class, but in sedan form

My only additional comment would be that if you could swing it, maybe an S63 Coupe would offer very little compromise. It would have everything the S550 Coupe has and all of the best E63 S attributes (except maybe a little more heft/comfortable chassis).

I always think of cars like the CL's, S class coupes, M6 etc. as old man pimpin. It sort of looks like a sports car but is fat like a large sedan....yet doesn't have the actual practicality?
I dunno - maybe when I'm older and want to get to the golf course in style and coffin quiet I'll desperately want one.
Now look, I'm clearly not saying that the E63 is a WRX or something, but I can't imagine cross shopping the two really.
What do your driving habits look like? If I had a 200 mile a day commute like one forum member had, then I can see rocking the S class because it's less about fun/sport and more about survival and arriving less fatigued.

From my experience there is no comparison between the E Class and the S Class even if it is the E63 versus S standard. I would go as far as to say my old 2004 S430 is a better car than the 2014 E63 S. The E63 is obviously much faster, but beyond that the S is a better quality car overall and has options that still aren't included on the E Class 10 years later. I just purchased a new C43 as my wife's daily driver and I would say there is far less difference between the C and the E than there is between the E and the S. I did buy the E63 Class to replace my S (ended up keeping both) but will be moving back up to a newer S Class again as I just don't like the E63 that much. Apologies if that is blasphemy in this part of the forum. I do wish there was a short wheel base S63 sedan but I guess that would be asking too much.

mine even before getting it tuned felt very very fast aside from off the line, and that's because of the TCU torque limits in place to protect the MCT.

I also haven't really seen most of those things other than distronic being very useful (that's me personally with my driving habits). My friend's honda pilot has the new google interface and it's lightyears better when an actual software company creates car software (shocker). I mean, look at MBrace. What a pile of....
So yeah, I will fully accept our E63's are not the essence of high tech
I'm in it 75% for the exhaust note haha.

The 360 cam on my 2014 benz blows my 2016 550i's out of the water but in 2017 the BMW has the best looking Birdseye
i spent $100k on an engine and drivetrain not the tech

i see when you first got your e63s you felt underwhelmed by its acceleration. Did you ever get it tuned or find out why that was the case?

With all that said the E63 is a good car and a nice winter daily driver. The context of this question though puts it up against the S Class. In terms of my earlier comment that my old S Class is a better car, maybe better perspective would be to say there is (I believe) an obvious difference in how large the investment on the base platform is between the classes as a starting point. Everything from the thickness/quality of the glass, sound deadening material, fit, finish, etc, etc. It goes without saying, the AMG bits and parts are a serious investment and all awesome, but on a lesser base platform which I find hard to overcome. I will also admit I'm partially spoiled as well because I compare the E63 versus my older SL63 and from that one it isn't even remotely a close comparison between the two.

Yea that's true, e63 is more sporty for sure. It's significantly lighter with the same engine, so it is faster as it has same engine as S class with less weight. S class is definitely more geared towards quality/luxury/comfort.

If you can't do the S63 Coupe, stick with the E63. My Mom has an S550 and the driving experience is basically identical to the coupe. Way too boring vs E63S. Even the S63 Coupe feels far more tame than the E63S.
That said, the S63 feels FAR superior overall to the E63. I almost traded my E63S Wagon for an S63 Cabriolet but got distracted (I have car ADD) and ended up buying a completely different vehicle ('97 993TT) and kept my Wagon.
If you don't need the practicality of a sedan, the S63 Coupe/Cabriolet is the way to go. It's definitely worth stretching your budget to get the S63 vs S550 Coupe.

Haven't driven either, but both are at the top of my list. Given these two choices, you probably can't go wrong either way.
Me? I'd choose the S550 4Matic coupe especially if it were loaded with the upgraded leather int / seats. Whereas the E63 is loud and proud, I lean to the understated elegance of the S-class coupe.
I think my E550 biturbo is fast, but can only imagine the acceleration from the mighty E63S! The M278 in the S-class is rated for a few more ponies than in my car, so it's good enough (not enough, but good enough if you catch my drift).

Want a curve ball? Throw in a new W213 E63 longroof to this discussion and watch me drive a wagon! Zero hesitation. I think...
