i tried to make a homemade version of this, to impress a stripper, by hooking a garden hose up to the exhaust and routing the hose in back rear window....
didnt work good as i got super dizzy and the stipper died
moral of story, pumping in exhaust noise is not as preferable as exhaust noise from tail pipe

only certain models do... was mostly to make the audi/vw TDI's sound like gasoline engines.... its called "soundaktor "
not sure if RS7/S8 has it, but the models that do have it, its easy to disable and lots of DIY's on it whereas i am pretty sure MB will find a way to make it impossible to disable
the problem with not being to disable it is that the exhaust track it plays would not match your actual exhaust note if you get an aftermarket exhaust and would be like playing 2 different songs at same time = annoying

This all come to 2 things. Supply and demand and trending. One automotive maker does and it sells, others will follow. Not sure how accurate the exhaust sound coming from the speaker theory came from or if it is even verified because the manufacturers don't announce things like this, but hey. You and I will not be the first nor last to buy it.
