LSD install on non LSD car (2013 E63 P030)

Hi there. About to take delivery of 2013 W212 E63 and the only thing it didn't have that I do want is LSD. Found plenty of information on here regarding various LSD options (Quaife/etc). Just curious how involved it is to install on a non-LSD car (read: a hour or two at shop on lift, or a involved job). Figure I might crazy to think it might just be a drop in replacement, but stranger things have happened. heh.

Thanks, looking forward to taking advantage of the resources here and adding information whenever I can.

Have you been in an AMG non LSD car? They're not one loggers like the old days and unless you're running track days on a regular basis and looking for every last advantage, they're not needed.

I have only been in one with LSD. Thanks for the thoughts. I hadn't planned on doing anything until I spent some time with the car to feel things out... but perhaps I won't need to do anything. Thanks

The best or nothing
LSD is the single best mod I have ever done to my E55 and I was specifically looking to get an 63 S model so it is "complete". There are plenty of non-S cars in Europe and are way cheaper.

LSD had totally transformed my previous AMG.

Interesting. I had the exact opposite experience in my E55. My standard diff never had a problem on the street or the drag strip getting power to both wheels. When I installed the Quaffe I expected something dramatic. Couldn't notice a thing and it didn't affect my track times in the least bit. The affect was such a disappointment that I specifically avoiding paying the mark up on an LSD E63. With that said, my E63 also exhibits zero problems applying power to both wheels.

Maybe I'm the exception instead of the rule...???

Traction in a straight line is going to be the same as a factory limited slip. The Quaife shines in corners. You're able to apply the throttle sooner and exit faster, particularly in tight corners. They offer no advantage in drag racing. They're fantastic on a circuit.

I haven't seen the inside of the diff in a W212, but I believe it's fairly traditional and not an "active" diff.

If you want to do the swap and can get another diff housing built up with the LSD before hand it's probably a quick R&R.

If not then this will take more time and more care as you'll need to make sure all the normal things in a gear install are taken care of such as pinion spacing, bearing preload, and checking/setting backlash. Not something where you just yank the open carrier and install the LSD carrier and call it done.

Are you doing this yourself or going to hire a shop?

I did the Wavetrac on my E55 and there was definitely a lot of difference in the way the car behaved. Obviously I noticed it more in turns than straight lines. No real change in straight lines.
