Replacing Rear Air Springs on W212 E63

I've learned "rear air springs" are apparently the proper designation in a W212 AMG for the air suspension or air struts or generically aimatic that we have. On Father's Day I completed a successful replacement of the frequently leaky OEM air springs with the Arnott A-2790 (right rear air spring) and the A-2791 (left rear air spring). After looking at them together, the Arnotts are frankly the higher quality product. At exactly $400 all-in (one cost me $208 on Amazon, the other $192 - weird), they are significantly less costly too. Easy job. 4.5 hours of my time, though I was pretty slow for two reasons that I outlined in the W212 E-Class DIY posting.

Since I didn't see a DIY for this project here in the AMG forum, I just wanted to let you know that this DIY linked below from the general W212 E-Class forum is just fine. I included my key learnings at the bottom of it.

Holy sh*t...are there any good aftermarket options for this car?

amgggg... 06-21-2018 09:51 AM

Apparently not :wtf:

At least you can get Brabus (appear to be Bilstein coilovers) for a grand apiece? Would prefer that over stock Monroes.

BTW are you talking about air struts or the electronically damped shocks? W212 E63 of course does not have front air struts.

Currently the front shocks are dealer priced at over $1k usd EACH with no aftermarket alternatives. It’s an effing joke!

Shut the front door! That's ridiculous. For a monroe shock.

That's was a good DIY tutorial from the general W212 forum!

Godspeed/another company makes some... well, $1000 coilovers - so, YMMV on the long term on them.

CKS also makes a set, but it would behoove anyone to reach out to Evasive for clarification on fitment.

I interpreted it as $1000 per strut since it says "Each". But that's some sort of mistake. I checked the Brabus part number online and it's 8900 Euro: http://www.brabus.com/en/deliver.php?id=13804

If they forgot a zero in the price, then it would make more sense. Those are some nice-looking coilovers.

Thank you for sharing this! Very instructive DIY from the other forum, and good to know it works the same way on our cars. Since this is one of the parts that a certified pre-owned warranty doesn't cover, it's good to have these!

BTW - personally I'm delighted this is not an integrated solution, since the rebuilders (like Arnott), 90% of the time do not refresh the internal shock, or sub a switchable shock for a one position one (which makes sense for them). That means you may be fixing your air leak, but the normal hydraulic shock is worn out over time (as they all are). With this setup you at least have a chance to switch one without the other.

Actually, CPO does cover the air shocks, just not the rest of the system. That said, I had both shocks (air bags), compressor, etc. replaced under CPO when my passenger side shock failed last year. See attached for comparison of what's covered by CPO (Star Certified Warranty) and ELW (Extended Limited Warranty) which came courtesy of my dealer. This is for Canada, not sure if US coverage differs.
