m157 Oil consumption
Hows everyone's oil consumption? Since the weather warmed up I'm noticing to go through a quart every 500-600 miles. Hard driving, car is tuned.

I would say normal, especially saying hard driving and tuned. Saw about the same in mine, maybe 750 miles hard driving. 1500 or so "normal" while tuned.

I have cut down a lot on oil consumption using Liqui Molly instead of Mobil 1. I was going through a quart at least every 2k miles. Now I see about 4K miles. I also change my oil every 5K miles.

Idk when the previous owner did an oil change, but I drove 4k without adding or car requesting for more. Some spirited freeway ramps but mostly speed limit cruising and bumper to bumper traffic. M1 0W40.

Thanks for the response! My car has good power doesn't smoke on idle, gets great MPG. Since the weather got plus 90F my oil temps have been reaching 230F and I have been noticing the accelerated oil consumption. Going to switch to liquid moly 5w-40

I burned through 10 quarts in 3000 miles when I first got my car. They redid my pistons and rings, basically whole engine out. Afterwards, now I am consuming about as you do, about 1 quart every 500 miles, which is outside of their spec of I think 1 quart per 700 miles, but I am starting to think the M157 engine simply consumes oil. I think I heard this is common for cars with turbos.

If under warranty have dealer do consumption test. Can't hurt and it's free. May end up with new pistons...
Switching to Liqui Moly 5w40 will definitely help also. Be sure to get the lm2331 or lm2332 part number in the purple/navy blue jug. They make a different 5w40 that is not MB approved and is not the correct oil

My 2015 burns a quart every 1200-1500 miles and I drive it hard and it is AMS tuned and using stock Mobile1. So I am pretty happy about that.
My M156 2011 was the best at a quart about every 2500 miles!
My W210 2000 E55 was the worst by far at a quart every 500-700 miles. In fairness though that darn thing had oil leaks the day I drove it off the lot new. Dealer would actually try to tell me it was normal for those cars. I gave up eventually and lived with it. Thankfully an elderly lady put her out of her misery by running a red light about 4 years back and put me into the 2011 E63.

I baby my car and barely jump on it .... never need to fill oil .... literally. I have 26k miles, had it since new
my wife's Bmw 550i takes a quart every 5000 miles even with aggressive driving
the manual for the e63 says a quart every 1000 miles is normal... someone correct me if I'm wrong
if you're filling a quart every 1000 miles that's 10 quarts in 10,000 miles (I know, I am wicked smart) so is that like a oil change in between scheduled oil changes sans the oil filter? Seems like it would be a good think so long as you have no oil leaks or cracked cylinders etc or anything adversely causing consumption ....

Agree..
+1 on the liqui moly...haven't added a quart since I changed to it. And much quieter valve train..

I always change with Mobil1 0W-40 and don't add any between changes. But I don't have a tune nor do I drive the car very hard.

Bumping an old thread...
I've searched the manual and online, but can't seem to find an answer on this;
At what point in use does the "top up one quart" message come on? I.e. if we have 9qrts in the car after a service, does it come on at say 6 quarts left?

Benz notes, min level on dipstick, to add 1.1 qt's of oil.. They also states when low oil level warning appears, the oil has dropped to the min level (min level on dipstick) So this SHOULD also be add 1 qt aswell.
I usually always check my oil level via dipstick and dont rely on the computer. Normal operating temp, shut off engine, wait 5 mins, check oil level via dipstick.

Was just curious as the car went 4k miles without asking, then it's asked for a quart every 1k miles (for the last 2k miles) lately which is within merc's specs, but still a touch annoying.
Getting serviced within a month anyways will bring it up there just in case.

Thought I would share what's going on with my 12 E63 wagon.
The oil warning light came on after 1600 miles since the last oil change. It only comes on while cruising on the freeway, doesn't come on while in stop and go traffic.
So when I checked the dipstick as described by most on here, I was a little surprised.
When I pull out the dipstick the first time it's hard to see a level on it, see 1st pic.
The 2nd time when I wipe it then pull it out the oil level is not as low on the dipstick as I would think? See 2nd pic. To cause the oil min light to come on.
