2013 vs 2014 E63?

Hello,

I am thinking of switching over from my E60 m5 to an AMG (mainly due to its brutish exhaust!) I was wondering which car is easier to drive on, on the limit. Also, is the 2013 too tail-happy like the last gen C63's?

How are their reliability, as my current M5 is basically a ticking time bomb. Are there any major upgrades between the non-facelifted version and the facelifted version aside from exterior and interior cosmetics?

Thanks all!

Thanks for the link. The engine in the 550i is really unreliable in general, but the f10 m5 engine is actually really reliable.

Seeing that you are from Chicago, is your car good in the rain and snow? I will be using the car in Illinois too.

Give me good evidence that the s63 or s63tu is "really reliable"

My '63 is a daily driver and the awd with all seasons is solid with all season conti dws; you won't be disappointed

We have a 2015 X5m in the family with around 80k miles, and it runs like a charm. Just look around, the engine isn't bad at all.

Yes I know, and my car has less than 40k miles. But I want something more reliable and easier to drive in the snow, as I go to school in Illinois, though I reside in LA.

interesting about the s63tu.... will have to check it out as all I've read is bad stuff, there are also anecdotal stories about 2011 550i's that don't burn oil or have any issues ...so anything is possible

youll like Iike the e63 engine ... mct vs dct will be another story

Ive seen quit a few with issues, this past summer my friends f10 M5 injector got stuck open flooding the cylinder causing the connecting rod to bend.

yup that's what I've heard as well; the internet supports that the s63/tu isn't that reliable ... but give me good non-anecdotal body of evidence that it is a reliable engine and I'll believe you

I'm sure it does but it seems to be a much bigger issue on BMW's I haven't heard or seen it first had on an AMG. Every BMW I've owned after my E46 M3 has given me way more problems than my AMG's. I currently have 2 BMW's and have replaced about 12 injectors and a bunch of other stuff. I still prefer to drive a manual M car over an AMG but the AMG's are definitely built better.

and as you said in your recent post-- your m157 has been very reliable even with a tune

E60 M5 has the SMG, not the DCT. The SMG is notoriously problematic but the fixes have become far more affordable. The DCT was only available in the M3 those years. I too, am making the switch from BMWs to the E63, mainly due to the want of a wagon but my E90 M3 has had its share of issues. I have an aftermarket warranty thats paid for itself easily, seems the consensus around here is to better save your money from the warranty as the E63 tends to be more reliable than previous generation of Mercedes that Ive read about.

I don't know that you can go that far. "to save your money from the extended warranty". I believe the warranty, while the car is still eligible, is a real Peace-of-Mind investment" It paid over many times on my last E63. I think more guys on this site will tell you they would prefer a warranty on their AMG rather guys that will tell you they don't need or want one.

Just making sure no bad conclusions are drawn.

he said he has an x5m in the family; what type of trans is in that, that's what I was referring to

anothet $3000-5000 for an extended warranty is a small price to pay for peace of mind and if it's transferable it adds a little bit of value to the future sale of the car.

Sadly i think many companies will be looking for $5000-7000 for an e63 warranty

And Im one who would rather invest for peace of mind but going off a few threads Ive read, quite a few have said save your money. I paid $4700 for my warranty on my E90 and its paid over $10k in repairs. Id say thats a good investment and we all know the amount we get charged for an M or AMG vehicle. Regardless what anyone recommends, my CU offers a really good warranty that has paid claims without questions. To me, worth its weight in gold. But I dont want to give my opinion on a car Ive never owned

I believe the 05s have a DCT but Im not sure. As far as warranty goes, Id pay $5k but not much more than that. $5k bill is easily obtainable on these higher brands. The evaporator job on my E90 was $3k which my warranty covered. Add valve cover gaskets, steering pump, radiator etc, Im waaay ahead. Personally Id rather lose a small amount on the warranty cost then get caught with my pants down on a $40k+ engine

Well, I can tell you first hand that my Member's Choice warranty that I also got from my CU cost me $4k for my 2011. That warranty paid out almost $30k for the following:

Snapped rear axle
spun #5 rod bearing requiring a new crank and all new bearings plus 1 piston rod.
New cat assemblies and muffler assemblies as a result of a coil shorting to ground and dumping raw fuel into the exhaust that blew up those exhaust components.

Granted all of these items are uncommon for these cars. But isn't the whole point of a warranty like this to have you covered for the unexpected?

I really can't say strongly enough that if you are able to get a warranty that is solid, do it. For a lot of guys, they can't even get the warranty when they want to buy one for various reasons.

Good luck whatever you end up doing.

Thats the same one I have! They've really been great on my M3 its made me a believer. Im someone that will pay for peace of mind. Sounds like you've had a great experience with them on the E63 which is good to hear. Sucks you've had all that trouble though

According to the title post only, I gotta recommend the 2014 E63S. It is a performance MONSTER supercar. If u can afford one, plus an extended warranty, there is no way I can see that the 2013 even compares, except for maybe appearance. If you're that worried about occasional breakdown, I don't know what to tell you. It's gonna happen, be prepared for it financially. Keep it serviced regularly and put an extra oil change in at 5k intervals. You will NOT be disappointed.
