2014 E63 AMG Wagon - Two quick questions
I am new to the MB world, looking to come over from Audis, and I'm specifically interested in picking up a 2014 E63 AMG(s) wagon locally here in Toronto, Canada. The specific one I am looking at is a little high on the KMs (140,000) and has two "concerns" / opportunities that I would need to address in picking it up. They are:
- It's got a straight pipe exhaust setup with no cats or mufflers (FI I believe) and would be impossible to live with in my neighbourhood. My question, without reverting fully back to stock could I just add a couple of Magnaflow cats that would reduce the noise level somewhat? OEM cats are like $5,000 for both
- According to the dealer it has carbon ceramic brakes that need to changed and doing all four corners with pads and rotors is ... well pretty insane in terms of costs. I talked to a parts guy at MB here in Canada and the VIN says the car came with steel brakes to start with. My question, can you revert back to steel brakes?
These cars are insanely nice and I'm definitely in the market to pick one up and I get that these aren't cheap to run but any insights on the above would be amazing.
Thanks!
Sasha
Not sure if I understand how that works but there you go. It doesn't seem too bad a cost with that reality. Just looking at cats then.
1- I would look for a set of stock muffler and keep the rest as is, it'll be something you can live with. I;m running stock muffler with resonator removed and replaced with H pipe. Its quite-ish when cruising but loud when on it.
2- Can you post pictures of the car/wheels? What color are your calipers? Red, grey or bronze?
Here are the wheels. Again, seeing it in person tomorrow but after speaking MB Parts they did say the VIN said they were steels to begin with.

These are definitely not Carbon Ceramics Brakes, most likely previous owner wanted the "CCB" look and powder coated them that color. If he straight piped it I wouldnt be surprised ahahaha

There will always be another deal so don't rush it

LOVE the white! I missed out on a white one before giving up on colour and just snagging one with good warranty.
Agreed with what others have said above. The car in question is nice, but don't force. My last 2 wagons i bought pre-owned and it took alot of looking to find the right one.
As for sounds - my wagon has resonators removed with addition of X-Pipe and same as Sam - around town nice rumble, but WOT sounds like a BEAST!!!!!
Love my white wagon - they are definitely unicorns -
I reached out to FI as the exhaust setup on there is supposed to be valved but the car doesn't have the remote or they haven't tried the bluetooth setup that may be on there. The valves seem to always be open but based on the FI website you should be able to control the valves. Any insight from FI exhaust owners let me know. If the setup isn't valved and always open I'll either sell the exhaust in favour of something more reasonable or try and add a resonator. There are mufflers on the car.
Also looking into an aftermarket warranty as well to cover my basis.
No panic buying for sure ... and big thanks to the community here for the comments and support!
I would simple say that the merc has a little bit more of a wild side to it. Even when in comfort mode. Its the guy at the bar with a 5 o'clock shadow, three women, scotch (neat), plaid socks and rolex (at 1000am). The worlds most interesting man. Audi is poised and refined. He drinks only after 5pm at his regular bar, is clean shaven, wearing a neatly pressed and expensive suit, and just maybe has that token arm tattoo he got when he was in college but never talks about. Lookout!
As an enthusiast, you usually tune a audi to make it 'how it should have been designed from factory". I expected this to be the case before buying the e63....Nope. Will I tune it? Yes, but its not 'necessary' like with most audis. It comes that way. Under load the merc squirms and protest to let you know its on the ragged edge of absurdity while audi seems to whisk you away without the slightest protest. The MB even 'farts' at you in the garage (rear suspension valves). IT IS ALIVE!
Good luck.

You could definitely add an aftermarket high flow cat, would address the smell, help with some of the noise and be dramatically cheaper.
As other have mentioned you are just changing the stock steel rotors/pads. The painted calipers do look nice.
