Buzzing Harman Kardon center dash speaker, W212 E63

The dealer would not give me a price up front to replace the buzzing Harman Kardon center channel (dash) speaker in my 2012 E63. My favorite Mercedes specialty shop wanted $405 for OEM replacement.

I found these helpful PDFs posted in another forum, removed the display unit (fingernails to removed the plastic trim piece, a small torx bit to remove the display screen), then I was able to reach under the dash and push the pins from below to remove the speaker cover. The speaker itself is not screwed in, you can just grab the anchor points and pull up. There are two wires connected to the speaker. I just disconnected it and put the speaker cover back. I could not tell a very big difference without that 2 inch center channel speaker, so now I'm just motoring with no dash speaker. Still sounds good to me, and no buzzing.

An OEM replacement is $140 from MB direct, part number 212-820-20-02. Maybe I'll order it if I really start to miss that center channel.

So here's a question, should my speaker indicate in any way that it is from Harman Kardon? It just has the MB and Logic 7 logos.

ETA: I went back to the CarFax I got when I bought the car. Sure enough the first and only warranty repair on this car was a radio speaker. So, again, should this speaker have been labeled as a Harman/Kardon ? And that dealer just replaced it with MB generic?

Excellent add to the knowledge base! I can only imagine how much the "long wedge" tool costs - probably AMG specific and made by special elves that are paid $1000/hr.

My car had this issue as well. I had that crappy speaker replaced at a local shop for like 70 dollars. The replacement wasn't anything special just some random speaker... I don't even notice a difference in sound quality just so much better with that static sound gone.

Maybe direct sunlight dries out that dash speaker?

Well I paid MB $140 and installed the new speaker. Hardly any difference in sound, the audio was fine without it. It just bugged me to know there was supposed to be a speaker there.

ETA: The space behind the display panel seems like a good place to hide something...

What happens with the center speaker is that sun & heat dries the glue for the surround cone and it seperates creating the buzzing sound. I took mine out, cleaned all the old crusted glue and applied super glue and it has been working fine for more than two years in 50c weather.

I have reglued speaker cones in my home speakers, but I could not find any separation at all that would explain the buzzing in the center channel speaker I removed.
