How good is the AWD on the 2016 E63S?
The AWD on the E63 W212 is not really for snow or off-roading. It's more for performance in a good weather scenario. Great traction when doing 1/4 mile, for example. With snow tires, it can be fine in the snow, but you would need snow tires just like you would if the car were RWD.

Off-roading is 50/50 false - the issue ther eis all about clearance and of course the risk of scratching up your nice car.
The front transfer case like to blow seals, mine was replaced at 30K miles under warranty and I think there have been a few threads here as well. Not sure how much HP they can handle but the output shaft and TCU aren't your friend when looking for hard launches out of 1st with a moderate tune.
Handles fine in snow for me but as others have said it's all about the tires and clearance. I'm driving the truck in winter not the garage queen.

I've had plenty of cars where you can get by on All seasons (no seasons) in the snow. Not this one.

That's quite a story - too bad that the person that bought the car from auction did not follow up with the repair process.

The car has a RWD bias and tends to understeer versus many other AWD systems. For a winter car the limiting factor is ground clearance.
I use the E63s as my winter car and it is a DD in the winter. Does great. Definitely need to have the added traction of winter tires to manage the available torque.
My biggest issue is that I install the winter tires early in the season and keep them on late in the spring as I have zero desire to drive with the 'summer' tires in non-summer conditions.
