Help with identifying the sound please

Hi forum,
2016 E63 AMG S , 70K miles on it.
Took the tune off months ago.

I have been noticing a weird "slapping" noise that comes and goes. It's only present in idle really.

Please take a listen and let me know if you have ideas what it might be. And no I'm not talking about the valve lifter clicking (normal)

The sound that is at about 4 Hz frequency?

It's not under load so not likely piston slap

spun bearing and rod knocking is clearly what you're worried about and if this is a new noise that would be my concern

Lemme check mine

Yea your sounds great.. I guess I'll have to take it to the shop - but this one might be super expensive.
I've taken care of mine very diligently but had some misfires with Eurocharged tune where it would start misfiring when I floored it from like 60 to 90 and it would then just continue misfiring hard on everything until I pulled off on the shoulder , turned it off and then back on.
It was weird .. .I wonder if those instances caused damage.

at minimum scope the cylinders ... but yeah if they have to inspect the bottom ... that's pricey and engine comes out

m157 definitely doesn't like misfires ...

Are the lifters and camshaft adjusters a common problem on the m157? Sounds very similar to lifter tick and failing camshaft adjusters I had on a m156

I think Peter has the right idea. Do a frequency analysis. Find the frequency of the sound and determine what the frequency of the piston movement should be at 650 rpm (11 Hz, double check me). There are apps that will analyze sound. I use phyphox, The trick would be to isolate the "bad" sound from the normal sounds. At least you could remove lower end issues, piston slap, rod knock, piston pin knock, etc.
By the way, have you looked at what your wastegates are doing? If they are fluttering that may give you a noise like that.
Good luck.

good call.. see if hitting the brakes while in park changes the frequency

Also found an old Tasos video without any answers. Lots of commenters saying theirs sounds the same.

yea,.mine ended up being scored 5th cylinder. I ended up trading it in before it became a big problem and got a '19.

Interesting. Was that the reason for the sound though?

Sorry for the confusion. I'm assuming a scored cylinder results in piston wobble within the cylinder wall which is where the sound was coming from?

Interesting. I found a few more threads I in a couple of other forums where guys were hearing the same sound but it wasn’t due to cylinder wall scoring or piston slap. Seems like nobody really knows the exact reason for the sound.

I just noticed something with this sound. Only can hear it when the vehicle is in R or D. It goes away when it's in P or N.
