Spark plug setup for a tuned engine

I know that there’s a mega thread in this topic, but there’s just so much to read through lol. So for E63’s with the M157 that have a tune, the consensus is to close the gap to 0.22 right?

What plugs would you guys recommend the next time I replace them? The previous owner of my car just told me that he burned 6-8 coils as a result of driving hard. I want to avoid this.

I would reach out to your tuner and go by their recommendation.

Both plugs work perfectly fine. Some run the oem plugs gapped to 0.022, others run the NGK step colder plugs. As long as the gap and proper indexing is done, you will be fine. Also update the coils to the newer design that have a thicker sleeve/shaft

Run the car as hard as you want just change coils ever 10k miles - small price to pay

as mentioned - look for the Beru coils (over the old Bosch ones); the engine bay and turbos generate lots of heat and deteriorate the coils

I have OEM plugs OEM gap and run three tunes aggressively without issues - I change the plugs every 10k also

always wise to go with the tuner suggestions as mentioned

I would have done that if I was the one who got the car tuned. But alas, I bought it from an insurance auction and found out it was tuned when I received it. I did find out who did the tune(Shiv Pathak) from the previous owner however.

Also, the previous owner informed me that after he went through a set of coils, he had the spark plugs replaced in addition to the coils by his buddy who works on tuned Mercs. I’ve already reached to him to see if he had gapped the plugs. Also reached out to Shiv.

There is no evidence they are better IMHO for performance or longevity - show me the data - just seems structurally better. I have bosch now and had beru before and car drives fine.

@PeterUbers So I unfortunately was not able to get any sort of response from Shiv(tuner of my car w/previous owner) as to what gap I should set my spark plugs to. Should I just wing it the next time I change the plugs and and gap them to 0.24?

0.022 is generally accepted by most big name tuners as sufficient. I have mine at stock 0.033 and car is running strong across three tunes (e40/93/100); I do change the plugs every 7500-10000 miles since they're running hot with the tunes and don't want the tip to break off in there

Thanks Pete. I'll do 0.22 and go from there. The mechanic who maintained this car when it with the previous owner did get in touch with me and said he didn't gap them when they were changed out last.

I dm'd him through Instagram. He's active there. Even commented on one of his pictures he posted regarding my DM(like 5 minutes after he posted it). Here's his Insta profile. Good luck!
