Air tank in E63S storage area?
I was at the dealer waiting to have the tires changed on my new S560, so I looked over a new E63S wagon sitting on the showroom floor. I got into a conversation with the salesman and he opened the rear storage compartment. I asked him what the silver tank was and he said that it would fill the tires up with air, while the car was MOVING. I kept questioning as to how this was done, but he insisted that you could be driving down the road, get a tire pressure warning message, hit a button and pump up the tire, without ever stopping. This all sounded like a fairy tale to me, so I snapped this photo and thought I would ask MY panel of experts—you guys on this forum—just what the hell this tank is for and precisely how does it work? Thanks!

I hope that salesman was joking... he better had been joking! That tank is for the air suspension only and does not fill up tires when moving which I think that is only on the G63 6x6 if I recall correctly.

sales people have almost no clue about the second level details of the vehicles they are selling. Most of them don't even know what colors are available.

It really doesn't look good on the person when making up things like that. Indeed, it's better to just be honest and try to find out, because no one knows everything.
If something like that exists, that will pretty much spell the end for run-flat tires. I wish something like that exists. There is that similar tank behind the rear fender compartment on the side of the trunk of the W212 model.

I just purchased a used e63 and while at the dealer I was looking at another car in the showroom and I happen to open the trunk cover. Both cars had the silver air tank however the showroom car had an additional unit to the right (under the license plate cover in the picture). It had some air tubing feeding into the silver tank. My car did not have that and I got concerned that maybe the previous owner removed this. Both cars had identical options except for the seats ( mine has the performance seats). Most of the salesmen were puzzled and surprisingly did not give any b.s. theories. They brought in the head mechanic and he stated they were both for the air needed for the suspension and other units requiring air. That extra unit in the showroom was an additional compressor for the standard seats. Apparently it needs extra air for the pneumatic bolsters that expand when taking a curve.
