E63 S electronically limited to 300 km/h

Didn't know this, but the E63s is limited to 250kmh and with the driver's package it will go to 300kmh that is ALSO electronically limited :o

It puzzled me how it could only go to 300 when m5 and panamera turbo s where going above with similar power ratios and with worse drag coefficient, and after seeing videos where the 9th gear would only kick around 300kmh I decided to research this and found that it is still electronic limited.

Why is that? Is this a normal behavior? One pays for unlimited car speed and then he discovers that it is still limited??

A number of the reviewers have mentioned this factoid, and I think it's in the Mercedes documentation somewhere too.

How often do you have the chance to run the car to 300 km/h?

During my European delivery vacation we spent most of the time still in the break-in period, but did get a chance to open it up on the last couple of days.

Even on the unlimited sections of the autobahn it was hard to find clear space to really let the car stretch its legs. Best we did was about 275 km/h before having to back out of it. The car was still pulling hard at that point though so I don't doubt it would pull all the way to 300 km/h. But I'll bet were it unlimited it won't pull that much over 300 km/h due to a combination of exponentially increasing wind drag and where the motor is at in the power curve by that point. So it is probably not THAT much of a limitation.

After the car shipped to the States I've only exceeded 100 mi/h a handful of times, contenting myself mostly with some hard acceleration here and there and enjoying twisty roads at mostly legal speeds. So the limit hasn't really impacted me and I'll bet most are in the same boat.

Ya, you get a ticket over 100 mph and it's a rough road ahead, at least in most USA States

i'm in luck where i live as there are several places where one can stretch a car to 300 km/h or more without any car in front of you. the E63S in a straight line gets to 300 in 45s or so. a few km are sufficient to get there.

there was a lot of money spent here in roads and everything else was left behind so we have lots of good roads with no traffic.

but it is not the point here. let a car go to where it can!
there is the anachronic limitation of 250 km/h (https://www.autoevolution.com/news/g...sir-47736.html) and one has to pay to remove the top speed limit and then finds out that this is not truly unlimited !!

this is ludicrous.

and one gets there in 8th gear and the 9th only enters around the (new) speed limit. so why 9 gears when the car will almost never use it?

For one thing, Y-class tires are rated at 300 km/h. Mercedes would have legal liability if they sold you a car that could exceed the tire rating. Tires rated for greater than 300 are very hard to find.

You need Brabus or http://www.performmaster.com/ to unlock your E63 to 315Km/h (maybe more.. I asked them to unlock my CLS63 with M157). You need to buy Alpina B5 to drive 330Km/h.

Why do you want to move your limited if you can just remove it?
ps. Brabus doesn’t move it to 315

I think you are on the right track. the BMW M5 and Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid surpass 300 km/h but they use tires rated (Y) not Y.

when you show the numbers on the car speedometer aren't them offset in excess from the real speed (measured by a GPS or something)?

yes, could use brabus, alpina, etc to unlock the power. it seems a simple electronic limitation (like the 250 km/h limit). but how about the tires?

also i don't like to mess/tune cars. i like to use what is provided by the manufacturer as they know better what their hardware can handle. in this case it seems AMG is just curbing the max speed because of the tires. The Michelin Pilot Sport 4S seem to be rated only Y

no, not mine. It’s preperly tuned E63 with no limiter on, while EC and others can’t do

Yes, car speedo shows 3-5 kmh more than gps read signal
on short trips, tires will be able to handle 300+. M5 had been able to go 345kmh with no danger. If you stay on high speed for too long? It may blow.
4s rated at (101Y) at rear, which gives you an opportunity to exceed speed of 300kmh

damn it. you're right. it seems the Michelins are also (Y) rated. what da hell... then why this limit? this makes no sense. why would AMG limit a performance number and be left behind the competition when the car can handle more??

it seems so, but that does not bode well for AMG technical expertise... I mean, they have come up with a stiff suspension to make the car handle like it does when BMW and Porsche have better ride and even handling with softer suspensions and they can even let their cars go above 300.

The speedmeter shows a speed different from the real speed. Approx 7km/h wrong in 250km/h..

Nope, the wagon is limited at 290km/h.. Same tires. They've said it is because of the aerodynamics of the car the speed is limited to 290 for wagons and 300 for sedans.

I do of course think this is too low speed, this summer I had max speed (290) for several hours during my trip to Germany. Sure will do the same thing next year.

My test with a calibrated GPS device shows that 297 on the speedometer is 290,xx in real speed, this matches with the speed limiter of my car that should be set at 290.

Damn and I thought I had a fast cruise from Phoenix to Vegas- How could you go hours at 180 ? what roads are open enough with no traffic?

hours at 290km/h seems exaggerated. probably means hitting that speed several times during a travel of several hours.

France has one or two highways where you can hit 300km/h for miles and miles, during the night. just have to pay attention to radars and cops

That would be 360 miles, and the fuel drain at 180 mph would probably be significantly greater than what I was seeing at an 80 mph average while driving cross country. With about 18 gallons of usable fuel at 20 mpg, that would be 360 miles range. Figuring 12 mpg at 180 mph (probably be lower than that), that's 216 miles.

So, don't see two hours of cruising at 180 mph without fuel stops.
