Looking into an E63 AMG Wagon - should I stay away?

Currently own a '18 Jeep SRT and looking for something more fun. I've always loved the E63, but a quick read here indicates the W213s have some problems that haven't been fixed (CELs and such).

Anyone else holding off until the problems are fixed?

Im not. I hope to get in on a Dec build date if I can iron out some final details of my custom order with my dealer soon.

First year models always have some issues that are usually ironed out on the second year. I remember when I was buying my F10 M5, the first year model's engine had a weird habit of blowing up LOL. Kinda annoying.

Also - as others have stated already, its always the vocal minority that have (legit) issues that post on the forums. Rarely if ever do the 99.1% of the users without any issues post thread stating "Hey, I didnt gave any issues today!" ;-) Ultimately - you should do what you think is best. Im just not going to hold these rare issues (and I do believe they are rare) as indicative of a larger issue with the entire model.

My 2018 Amg wagon

It’s had a bunch of rattles that dealer took care of and a CEL.

I suspect that the CEL was caused by the new engine being so tight that it was confusing the computer sensors.

I now have 8K miles on it and it running fantastic.

Rattles

I had a annoying wiring harness rattling behind the sunglasses holder, by my head.
The dealer took it apart and I think, put a piece of foam tape around it. Problem solved.

Second, the door gaskets creaked. Dealer was able to make better.

Great car!

2018 E63S Wagon
I've got an April '18 built wagon with 6k miles on it since May and the only issue has been a faulty rear hatch button that had to be replaced. Anecdotally, it seems early builds were where most of the problems happened, I haven't heard many people that had cars built in the second half of the model year, after new years, having many issues. And remember, people don't take the time to write "everything on my car is perfect and I'm having no issues" threads, so the feeling that problems are rampant is magnified with the echo chamber here. I'd say go for it if you can find a late build '18 or want to pick up a '19 whenever they are released.

It's not just early models, it's just 50/50 with the 18 models. Vic's edition 1, the youtuber that had the edition 1 never had one single problem

It might just be me but I don’t think half of the people with W213s on here have had dibilitating CELs. And I didn’t say 100% of early builds, just that there’s a predisposition if you have an early build.

I love mine, it is effortlessly fast and handles great. I was worried about the ride with 20 inch tires but have found it to be much better than my E61 BMW.
Every time I drive it I smile. CEL was an issue for me but it has not been an issue for over 3,000 miles. Build quality seems very good.

Let me clarify it's a hit or miss situation with our builds. There are also the community of people that buy E63s and aren't active on the forums that have these problems

What problems ? Sure there was the rear sway bar rattle and it was fixed it 5 min.

I love my wagon and have no regrets trading in my 991 Turbo S for it..

2022 4 Runner Pro, supercharged and lifted Lime Rush, 2018 E63s wagon Edition 1
Hello AndeyE63, I have one of three E63S Edition 1 wagons and, to date, no issues whatsoever. Now it only has 17xx miles on it but it is truly an amazing machine. To think that it weighs 4669 lbs and can crack off a 0-60 time of 3.4 seconds (though the mags have gotten 3.0 sec.) is pretty amazing. The car drives smaller and lighter than it is in my opinion. More than the speed is the build and the overall amenities included even before options are added. I would suggest getting the carbon ceramic brakes as they are really good and, I believe, save somewhere around 40 lbs in unsprung weight. I previously had a 2013 C63 AMG with the P31 package, limited slip diff., carbon fiber interior, porcelano napa leather and, though it was fast it just couldn't put its true potential to the ground due to only rear wheel drive. The new E63S really something and can be totally docile in traffic and a true monster when one wants it to be. Plus, It's a WAGON and can when called upon, kick some serious azz on a lot of very hi po cars.

Yes it's an amazing car, but the CEL issue is problematic.

Many people, probably most, don't have any problem and don't come saying that all is fine, but also some people will have this problem and will not come to foruns. Life happens outside of the internet also.

The issue is, this is a very limited selling car. Another even more limited selling car, the S63 that has the same engine, has random CEL also. So, in reality things can be quiet worst than what we might think, because if there are sold 100 of these cars on a given year and 10 people experience a CEL then we are already talking of about 10%. Can be more, can be less, but the number of people that have already reported this does not bode really well for the engine, and worst of seeing Mb /amg unable fix the issue.

I believe, or want to believe, that it's one of those pesky bugs, probably related to software issues combined with some not up to the task piece of hardware that will be soon solved by Mb /amg.

But it's a wishful thinking because we are already on 2 full years since the release of the model. How much time does a premium brand needs to solve a problem?

We had an issue with one of our three ed1 E63s sedans.. Both of the e63 wagons we sold were fine as were the nine other e63 sedans.. We've had no issues and sorry for people that has had... The 19s I would assume will be good ...

I'm still waiting for mine since June. That's why I'm wishing they can fix this and that the fix will not imply lowering the power of the engine.

PS : I'm in Europe

Based on your sample size, that would mean ~7% had a CEL, while ~93% have had no CEL. Given the tremendous praise this car has received from amateur drivers to professional critics, I would risk getting into this car knowing there will be a 7% chance of a CEL issue, but that is just me.

I am leasing this car; will drive it 2-3 years, and then dump - on to the next one. I suppose if one were to buy, and want to own for 4+ years, then yes, I would share your concern.
