CEL software fix coming in February

I received word that the software update which addresses the random Cyl 1,6 CEL issue is finally being released in February. I had a series of CEL indications due to "misfires" in the aforementioned cylinders which went away by themselves after I cleared them 6 or 7 times. I'm not sure if the 2019 E63S vehicles already have this installed, but I assume that everyone will be notified in due time.

I consider the source in my dealer service department as reliable. I'll post when I receive notification. In the meantime, I haven't seen any activity in the forum concerning further occurrences of CEL and that in itself is curious as well since there was a flurry of reports several months ago.

I have not at any further CELs than the one that occurred following my CEL diagnostic/repair visit. When the last one happened I had them just take data and clear the code.

Haven't driven the car a lot since then, less than 1000 miles anyway, so maybe haven't hit the right conditions to trigger it since they swapped around injectors and recalibrated.

I don't believe that this was due to injector calibrations. More likely, it has to due with the fuel tables being set too close and the variability of E10 gas in the US. I bet AMG just added a bit of latitude in the settings. I haven't had any more CEL incidents for the last 2800 miles.

The software update for the CEL issue for the cyl 1,6 misfires is now available! I'm having it installed tomorrow at my dealership.

The software update had already been installed on my dealer’s lemon buyback 2018 E63s for the check engine light and misfire.

Was this recently or last year? This software update is dated March, 2019.

I was told by my SA/Friend the software update was done on Monday of this week.

Any idea what the fix was - besides just turning off the CEL ;-)

The update had to have EPA certifcation in order to be released for the 2018 MY. There were two sets of updates 1. ECU modification to more precisely measure amount of fuel to a cylinder. 2. TCU update to pair with the ECU for modified shift points. Update took two hours to install. Post-install driving revealed no apparent behavior difference before the update.

Sounds like that could possibly improve mileage a small amount.

Perfect timing. After 7000+ miles since my last CEL for the 1,6 misfire, the CEL came back again yesteday. P0301 and P0306!

My supposition is that the base issue is the E10 summer gasoline blend. Now is about the time for switchover in the US. BTW, I assume that MY 2019 already has the updated software installed at the VPC. Time will tell.

I may be jinxing myself here, but I have had no issues with oxygenated Sunoco GT260. My car gets a steady diet of this and loves it!

at $10. a gallon ? Not sure why you would need that unless you are modded?

V70cat 04-12-2019 02:07 PM

Will the E63's get the software update with normal service?

What is the cost of service A?

At 7.49 its not too bad (the wagon is my weekend car). I like that its available out of the pump here, and there is a noticeable difference in response / consistency. Also gave me a half car or so advantage on another w213 (sedan) 63S at higher speed.

According to my shop foreman, your car must experience a CEL for cylinder 1,6 in order to be eligible for the update.

HBerman 04-14-2019 05:50 PM

Having driven with the updated software for a while, the gas mileage appears to be improved in Comfort setting by about 8%. My previous average mpg was around 18.3. It is now around 19.8 over the same driving course. Unexpected, but probably due to the revised TCU calibration.

HBerman 04-19-2019 07:52 PM

The CELs are starting again now that the gas is changing. Looks like the 2019 E63S did not get the updated software from the VPC. The issue is fuel metering at low rpm. I have had the update installed for about 3 weeks now with the only effect being improved MPG.

to be clear, your car with the latest fix doesn't have CEL's; you're commenting on new threads concerning 2019 CEL's....

Correct! No CELs and better MPG.

excellent!

tonecas 04-20-2019 07:58 AM

I'm missing something here. If the new software doesn't lead to CEL and also gives better mpg why isn't this being rolled down on every unit? What's the catch?
