Stock Front License Bracket
Hello all,
I've been driving without the front license plate (I'm in CA) and so far have not been cited. I understand that it's no longer a fix it ticket but a fine of $200.00 or so. Now I have the stock front license assembly and am considering installing it. Question is: Do you all think that the center bracket that snaps into place on the center post of the grill area is enough to hold it without drilling the two holes (which I don't want to do)? I've looked around MBWorld and on the web but haven't found anything other than after market stuff.

Yes- I have had my front plate/ mount clipped and not screwed on for 15k miles w/o any problems. I can remove it if I wanted to in 5 mins w out any holes or scratches on the car.

Yea, I was thinking about using a very small piece of double sided 3M tape to secure the plate holder where the two screws would go. But I understand that it's difficult to remove the tape and I'm thinking it may damage the paint so I'm going to try just securing it with the bracket that clips on to the vertical bar on the grill area like Danthedogman has done.

WIth the roads here in Socal, the clips will become loose when you hit is dip in the freeway and the the brack with the metal license plate will fall and most likely ding your front end. Get it mounted right ( yes with the screw ) so you can rest better when you are going head to head with someone and hit it dip because there are millions of them in Socal roads.

I thought about the double sided tape, and then thought about the Velcro approach instead for two reasons. One that it would be easier to remove the plate when I want to, and two because with the plate removed, one could use a heat gun to soften the adhesive of the Velcro patch.

I have an Euro front license plate bracket, and I use the center screw and then two 3M Dual Lock Velcro squares where the other two screw in holes were supposed to be drilled through. I picked the Dual Lock squares at Home Depot. Works amazing, holds perfectly and haven't had a single issue with falling, or separation or anything washing the car, or just driving. My car has front end Suntek Ultra PPF, so I wasn't too worried about things getting stuck to the paint and having issues later on.

Agreed, doesn’t need to be Velcro brand. We’ve use some of the same stuff you’re talking about for some mobile applications at work and they’ve held tougher stuff than a license plate.

Ok, you guys talked me into the Velcro stuff. I'll get some tomorrow and be done with this. Thanks everyone for your suggestions! I very much appreciate them.

I haven't done it yet - will wait till after I'm pulled over if I fail to talk my way out of it. I keep the plate in the trunk on the mount and would pull it out and show that it was a little wiggly and removed that day because I was worried it would fall off. May not fly but figure its worth a try.
If/when I do mount it, the Velcro (or non brand equivalent) tabs would be mounted to the front plate bracket on the back where the mounting screw pads are, and the other side on the front bumper.

I also have a European license plate bracket on the front (with real plates - I'm German) and I use 3M double-sided VHB tape to hold it in place. This only lasts so long until one side gives. I suspect it has something to do with the combination of Xpel PPF and Ceramic Pro. The velcro idea is something I will try. Thank you. I was going to try magnets behind the bumper but don't want to take it off again.
