E53 20" vs 19" wheels
I'm about to order a 2019 E53. 19" wheels with only all season tires are standard, and there are a number of 20" wheel options that come with summer tires. I have had a 2001 E55 for 18 years and I have always switched to smaller wheels with winter tires (17" vs. the standard 18") for the Chicago winters. I would like to continue doing that with the new E53 even with its 4Matic+ but am a little concerned that the 20" wheels might make for an uncomfortable ride - some review I read cited the 20" wheels as a downside. My E55 has always given a firm but comfortable ride but the wheels were 18" and the tires were smaller than the tires for an 20" E53 (front 245/40 vs 245/35, rear 275/35 vs 275/30). Any advice?

Can always swap for a smaller size during the winter time, but running larger wheels will always make for a much firmer ride compared to running a small wheel. A lot of guys I know get a second set of wheels and tires for the winter.

Yes, I would have a second set of wheels with winter tires in a smaller size. But does anyone have any comments on whether the ride is too stiff with 20" wheels and summer tires?

The only thing I can say is if Chicago roads aren't smooth during summer/warm weather and you don't get the wheel insurance, you'd be better off on the 19 in rims. The 20 in rims in my opinion would be harsher than the 19 in one's. You're already used to a softer ride and from what I've read you're looking to stay with that. Looks like nothing but a proper road test comparo will sort that out. Let's hope it gets warmer sooner so you can compare the two.
