Dyno question

I was recently at a local car event and a guy walking around was trying to drum up business for his place and his modifications he sales. He was talking to a bunch at Nissan GT-R guys while I was there and stated he had a Mustang dyno (I think that is what he called it) for 4 wheel drive vehicles. He then stated that he was offering 3 "pulls" (?) on it for $125. My question is, does that sound right? Google says it should be cheaper. Also is there anything I should look out for if I try this out?
(A little back ground. I'm in Upstate SC and I know very little to nothing about a dyno. I just think it will be neat to try out and see what the car actually produces in power.)
Thanks!

Thats regular price. Actually on the less expensive side. Some car meets at tuner shops will have a dyno day where dozens of cars go on, one after the other. So you may get a better "deal". But if you just want to get some HP #'s what the shop quoted you is a good price.

i agree that sounds in line price wise

there are two major brands of dynos: dynojet and mustang

i’m pretty sure they both are known to give different numbers and can’t compare one mustang dyno to another mustang dyno, or a dynojet to mustang and vice versa

am i wrong?

Pretty correct. Mustang dynos give the lowest HP and TQ #'s. Dynojet #'s will always be higher than a Mustang, and if you want super high bragging #'s Dynopack is your last option.

That is a reasonable price.
Use the dyno as a measuring tool for you car. There will always be arguments when you try to compare dyno number with other cars / shop etc etc.
Use draggy to verify the dyno results.

actually, you raise a super good point. this made me realize... dyno numbers really don't mean ****. 60-130mph is my favorite metric of how much *** your car can haul because it doesn't really depend on perfect launch conditions. some people like quarter mile trap times but i feel like you start running out of track if you launch like ****/don't do it on a prepped surface.

i wonder if dragy sales started to hurt dyno sales? :P

What is relation between dyno and dragy? What did you find in common between them ?

Thanks for the inputs. I did not know that there would be that much of a difference between dynos numbers. I was just looking to take the car and try something new with it. I'm going to research the company a little more before I decide to try it out. I think one of my GT-R friends is going to try it out and i'm going to see how he did first.

No correlation between the two really. Dyno measures power to the wheels via rollers, dragy measures time/distance/speed via a GPS sensor. Dynos return Horsepower and Torque #'s, dragy returns elapsed time vs speed and distance to give you 0-60, 1/8th mile, 1/4 mile, standing 1/2 mile and 60-130 times. You car roughly calculate hp/tq using a accurate 1/4 mile time and a few other variables. Naturally both tools are good for measuring improvement. Many will argue the "true test" or "only way for valid results is the 1/4 mile track.

How is that? Isn't this supposed to be more scientific?

Why do people dyno their car? To see how much power their car gained from their mods/tuning. What's the purpose of having a powerful car? To be able to go fast.

When I see dyno numbers, I always think "ok, so that means the car with ABC power can go XYZ fast"

Why would I waste my time on a dyno (since it is all just approximate and most of them will give you varying results) if I can just go see the power of my vehicle *applied* on the streets?

More power, faster car, better dragy times. Higher number on a dyno, supposedly faster car, maybe better dragy times?
