Normal engine Oil Temp and Trans fluid temps

Maybe it's in my head but recently its' been around 29-35 F outside, and usually I notice my engine oil and tans fluid temps staying around 175F/160F respectively while normal cruising on the highway.

Last few days, I've noticed the engine oil temp consistently stay at 185F-190F during regular cruising, while trans temp has been in its normal range ~160F-180F in normal driving (without any aggressive S+ driving at all).
The higher cruising oil temps don't make sense to me as the cool winter air should help the temps stay in the regular range of <175F. This isn't huge cause for concern as the danger zone is if the temps keep rising past 215F+... butt I've never had oil temps this high while just normal driving/cruising even in chicago summers when its 90+F. Engine oil temps always stay <175F-180F in normal driving.

I might have a pinhole leak somewhere... Or i'm just being paranoid.

On my 2018 e63 sedan my trans fluid temp remains pretty steady between 160-170. Oil temp varies greatly while driving. Usually oil temp fluctuates between 170 to 206.

id be interested to know if that seems right. Thanks

Yes that’s perfectly normal. My original comment was due to a ~10F degree rise in normal cruising temps, which all of a sudden made no sense to me. Even in cold winter air. 🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️

I wouldn't be concerned, I'd still consider your oil temp low.

Mine is almost always 208 once the car has warmed up. Transmission is usually ~175-180.

Thank you for your responses gents, I'm always watching the AMG performance screen and monitoring engine oil/trans fluid temps constantly while driving. I did add the Zunsport shields recently, so that will help keep me cruising worry free of debris damaging the coolers.

Cold night, temps after highway driving (hence estimated 400mi range per full tank of gas)

Let's see what it is on this upcoming Sunday. It is supposed to be a low of 12 degrees and a high of 18 degrees. Gonna be our coldest temps from what has been an unusually warm and zero measurable snow in Chicago.

2014 - W212.065 - E400 ( M276.820, 3 liter Turbo) RWD not Hybrid
MB on purpose drive coolant temp ( also engine oil temp naturally ) high once in a while, if it detects ambient temperature is cold.
When it detects lots of ambient cooling capacity... it will then push the coolant temp up.

MB wants higher efficiency. Often their engine coolant temp target is 107 - 110C Celcius.
From MAHLE : The combustion process in a passenger car engine runs optimally at an operating temperature of approximately 230°F ( 110 Celcius )
The thermostat is MAP controlled, like video below :
https://www.mahle-aftermarket.com/me.../mo-2-1013.pdf

Get a good OBD2 gauge with logger capability and see coolant temp profile, you will be suprised.
Even on older coolant dial gauge found in W212, the gauge movement/value is kinda a liar, so that drivers do not get scared. The gauge can "hide" up to 10C hotter temp and don't show it to us
WIS has this information. I posted about this too at W212 section.
https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w...inda-liar.html

I don't know if W213 E63 engine has a true oil temperature sensor or still the "calculated" ones.

Since I am in the tropics, it is easy to see the algo at work to achieve 105 Celsius (221F) 110 celcius (230F) coolant temp on purpose, once in a while.
I am at 30-33C ambient temp. If I go to higher elevation cooler temp at say 22C or sudden big rain cooling the radiator, the thermal algo then will kick in and do 105C to 110C for few minutes.

This is incredible info! Thank you for sharing, I suspected the car might be delaying the radiator fans turning on and letting the engine run hotter to compensate for cooler winter air but had never heard of MB doing that before. Makes a lot of sense.
