If you have a relationship with a MB dealer (or realize you're going to need one), go to your friendly service rep and ask if they would run a VMI report for you. Tell them (truthfully) that you're looking to buy this car and would be bringing it to them for service. So could they help you look up the background on the car?
Of course, if the car was never serviced at a MB dealership, there will be no info, but that is probably a clue to run away unless it's an impeccable example from a known specialty house.
