E63s USB A to USB C center console plug

Hey guys, I have a 2019 E63s and I was wondering if I could switch out my USB A port that is right next to my cup holders to a USB C port. I know there are other models that have USB C but I was wondering if it is just as simple as taking out the USB A one and then just replacing it with the USB C port and everything will work including Apple Carplay. Thanks!

A plug adapter is an easier solution -- they're only about an inch long.

Are you also looking to increase the wattage USB-C often has higher wattage/speed than USB-A as you know.

this has been discussed before - from the sticky:

I already have one but I like to just have a cable whenever possible and I saw that you can just pop it out so I was wondering if there was a replacement. Thanks tho for the idea!

Why do you want to switch out the port? That doesn't give you anything. You'll still just have USB-A speed and charging power. The crux with USB-C is that it is just a port. What protocols are delivered over the port is a different question. If you are just trying to connect a phone with USB-C, there are USB-A to USB-C cables. I use this one. It's nice soft and flexible and just the right length to connect the phone w/o having a long tangle of a cable.

All my cables I have are USB C cables so I just want to be able to grab a cable and use it in my car. I don't care about the charging speed or anything its just all my cables are USB C and I don't really want to buy anymore type A. It's also disconnecting sometimes and I have a feeling its the port itself so I was in the process of replacing it and figured that if I could just buy the type C port instead just to do that.

Well, just grabbing a cable and use it doesn't really work with USB-C. As said, USB-C is a bit of a mess. If you grab the wrong cable, nothing will work. You always need to have the right cable for what you are trying to do. There are cables that only support charging, others support data at various speeds, some others support video etc. Then there's Thunderbolt that also uses USB-C, but different cables.

Yes! Here is the USB-C port instead of USB-A. Can be found on ebay

Right, as said, the port and what's supported over it are two different things and depends on the hardware behind it. W/o the hardware supporting USB PD (Power Delivery), charging will be limited to the standard USB-A 5V and lower current power levels.

I've reached out nonetheless to the sellers on eBay to see what they'll claim ... more to come

Is it possible the head unit can deliver more than the usb-a requirements? Like a usb wall plug capable of multiple wattage depending on the device and plug used?

No, not unless the hardware supports USB PD. USB PD isn't just higher wattage. It's a whole protocol with handshake that negotiates the voltage and power level. The USB-C cables in case you didn't know are active. There's a chip inside of the connector and is part of the negotiation. The devices and cables negotiate the power and voltage level before any charging starts. It's much like an EV. You plug it in and nothing happens initially until the handshake took place and all parties agree on the charging level, then the charger delivers the negotiated power. So the head unit needs to support USB PD, otherwise it's just the standard 5V USB-A charging levels.

Yes, the new models that come with USB-C standard support USB PD for faster charging. BTW, there is also USB PD PPS (PPS = Programmable Power Supply). This standard supports infinite voltages essentially. USB PD only has a few discreet power profiles that devices can choose from. With USB PD PPS, devices can request any voltage and power level as long as the charger can support it. Support for USB PD PPS is not as widespread yet as the older USB PD.

Can anyone confirm that they've successfully swapped the USB-A connector (2019 W213 Wagon) for a USB-C?

The rear connector looks like it's just power and data so I wouldn't be surprised if it's compatible and there is a USB controller inside the part.

It looks like there are both remanufactured ($34) and new MB parts.

Type A (older) is directly connected to the NTG5.5 (Japan made) comand system.

type C (2021 onward) is connected to the armrest compartment usb port, then to NTG6.0 (German Made) MBUX system.

They are not swappable.

But there is relative expensive way to do this upgrade, if you do MBUX upgrade for 2019-2020 W213 cars, then that USB A port will be replaced by C port like the video below:
