Ordered my 2014 CLS63 S-Model today... need wheel opinions

Hello Everyone -- I ordered my first Mercedes AMG today and I am very excited!! I am new to MB World Forum, but thought I'd ask for some opinions, advice, and pics.

As of now, I have ordered Iridium Silver, primarily because I like the contrast between the light silver paint and the darker pieces on the front grille, rear spoiler and read diffuser. I want to put aftermarket wheels and tires on the car immediatly upon arrival, but I am undecided on which ones...
  • 19's or 20's?
  • Are there any functional concerns if I go with 20's? Clearance, steering, 4Matic issues, ride quality?
  • Color?
Any advice, pictures, etc would be much appreciated. Also, I am thinking about going with the B&O sound, but that causes the spare to be placed in the trunk (above the floor board) and I am not willing to do that... so it's B&O + run-flats, or no B&O. Anyone know have run-flats and how do they affect ride?

Thanks in advance.

TDwayne69 05-30-2013 06:44 PM

What was the base price for the S-model and what was your final price with options?

150shot 05-30-2013 06:44 PM

20's! The CLS is one of the more better riding cars and shouldnt be a problem concernig ride ( depending on how picky you are).

Just go with the same tire size and setup as most others have done and you should be fine.

I still like the old school lip design but I know most are moving away from, but your car your choice...enjoy!

I also have iridium, great color:y
for 4M you need the same rolling diameter right?
20's-bumby
19's-not so bumpy
you'll get used to them either way

the other things are personal choice: color etc.....
I don't know anything about the B&O, but I know it's
supposed to be a better system........
I am springing for the new Burmester sound myself......
and for wheels, I'd recommend HRE:naughty:
anyway, you've got time:)

Allow me to clarify:

20's are the best option for both form and function... the wider stance of the CLS swallows up puny 19's and with the amazing wheel forgings of today you will not lose any or much performance with 20's. The car is not a sports car but a straightline warrior than can handle. Its in a sense, a gt cruiser. People often "think" they drive their cars to the threshold and this is just not the case. Most dont even reach 90% so you wont be suffering from a functional concern. Do a search in this forum for numerous wheel upgrades. Almost all of them but maybe 1 or 2 are 20 inch set ups. Some are even 21's and 22's but thats overkill.

20's will not be more bumpy--- bumpiness is associated with lowering and changing the suspension geometry. What you will notice is more road feel since you will be running a smaller profile tire to maintain the stock diamter.

If memory serves me:

Stock:

19x9 255x35 (could be 8.5)
19x10 285x30 (could be 9.5)

Either way the tire widths and profiles are correct for the 19 inch OEM option.

20 inch plus sizing:

20x9 255x30
20x11 305x25

I ran this 20 inch set up and my car still crushed in the straights to speeds well past 160 and high speed big bends and lower speed sharp turns. Like I said you wont reach the maximum usage of the car. Now the only thing I can say about 20's is you have to have reasonable to good roads or you could have issues with bends (potholes).

Get the 20's enjoy the car AND its looks.

Base was $106,500. Final with options TBD, but I expect with Premium 1, Driver Assist, Parktronic, rear airbags (for the kids), carbon fiber trim, she'll be in the $117-118 range. Add Designo interior and B&O and I'd expect 125ish.

Burmester sound? Can you pass me a link? Have not pulled trigger on the B&O yet so maybe I'll save the $6400 apply elsewhere...

Great info Vic55. Thanks.

I was leaning toward 20's anyway, but based on this feedback, I will for sure now. Is the 255/30 - 305/25 what most are is running? any clearance issues?

20x9 255x30
20x11 305x25
Has anyone ever run this combo in run-flats? If so, any TPMS issues/concerns? Just don't want to lug that HUGE spare around in the trunk if I go with the B&O sound.

Hey Ryan1,

Thanks, that's just what I needed to know. So that's about $10,600.00 increase over the 2013's base price. I like the B&O, but not sure that I will go with it. I do love a good audio system, but with the B&O I would be giving up a lot of space. I guess that's another decision that I will have to make along with the color. What estimated delivery date are they giving you?

Thanks again,
Tony

Im sure some have run it with RF's but Im not sure what is the availability of such tires with those sizes. But yes those are the correct sizes lowered or not. You wont have clearance issues but make sure your wheel offsets are perfect (HRE will dial this in- I was their CLS guinea pig in 2011). TPMS is not an issue. RF's in those sizes are the same as a regular tire dimension wise brand to brand of course; some brands are slightly more round than others and may be tenths of inches shorter or taller (no biggie).

I personally dont like RF's- they are harder than normal tires so you will feel the road even more and they are super heavy. Unsprung weight does indeed count and you will feel it in the dig acceleration.

My build date is 6/25... not sure about delivery date yet... they said that the Designo interior option take an extra 6-8 weeks because it's all done by hand??? Seems a little odd, but I've never ordered Designo before...

Vic55 -- good point on the unspruung mass. Had not thought of that. I assume that HRE's or any other good wheel will reduce unsprung weight over the OEM wheels, right?

Anyone know if the Ceramic Brakes weight less too? I think on the M6 Gran Coupe they claim 40lb. reduction for their ceramics... wonder if MB is the same?

Did they say anything about a delay if you go with the B&O?

No mention of a delay for the B&O.

Yes the HRE's will drop weight for sure... mine were about 21lbs front and rear. And indeed CCB's will drop unsprung weight too (MB shaves weight but Im not sure how much)

Well that's good, I can't wait to see the real thing. I'm paying my last payment on my S550 next month to pay it off so I can't wait to do my own order.

Congrats on the new cls build! What did you get for designo interior?

I went with Platinum White seat/door inlays and black Dinamica headliner.

Rayn1

When you were doing your order and selecting options, did you see anything about the Carbon Fiber Engine Compartment Cover option (apparently the option cost $5400.00, but doesn't give any detail as to what's included)? Seems pretty pricey for just a carbon fiber engine cover.

Thanks,
Tony

He's absolutely correct, although I would step it up a size and go with 35's in the front and 30's in the rear. This is what I run on my w219 and I've got a smoother ride than my buddy with the stock 19's on his CLS63
