Exclamation Thinking of trading in 550 for 63

So since I bought the CLS550 I've been pouring money in it with new wheels, carbon fiber parts, exhaust etc just cause this belief is stuck in my head that AMG's are a lot less reliable and cost hell a lot of maintenance. CLS63 looks so much more aggressive and that exhaust note no matter what I cannot get it on the 550. Every time I see a CLS63 amg I'm in an awe that I really want that. There is a 2012 CLS63 amg with about 36k miles near me with PP and I am thinking of trading the 2013 550 in to get the 63.

People who own or have experience with the 218 63 amg, please provide some insights as to is it worth it? What kind of problems can I encounter with M157? Although I will get a PPI done, what should I be on a look out for when inspecting it myself? Is 36K a lot for an AMG engine?

Thanks !!

The best or nothing
After evaluating all pros and cons, I went with CLS63. The AMG is just more special and you get proper brakes, well tuned suspension, superb exhaust note, epic engine - overall a perfectly balanced performance package.
I’m sure you can build a super fast 550 but you also need to invest into brakes, engine and other parts.
I’d say the M157 and MCT should be pretty reliable.

Listen to your heart and get an AMG. I can tell, you are an AMG guy. Good luck man!

What area are you in? Those are low miles, not an issue. I would check service records of course, especially for regular oil changes. The only expenses I've incurred have been a new thermostat, brake rotors, brake pads, and a bent wheel. FYI, the AMG rotors retail for 1k each, but you can find them for less. The factory forged wheels retail for over 2k each. As for the powertrain, I would never own an AMG that wasn't under warranty, so I'd either buy certified from an Benz dealer or look into an extended powertrain warranty. My extended warranty cost me about 6k.

AMG motors are super reliable, it’s all the little bs that goes wrong with the car itself. My previous was an E55 that I logged 80K miles without a single issue to the motor. My CLS63 is superb, although you can turbo swap the 63s turbos into your 550 and make good power, you won’t get that bad *** biggo brakes with red calipers, tunes suspension, exhaust nite to die for with mods, and aesthetic. AMG or bust sir!

2012 CLS63
I've enjoyed mine since day one! Super easy on the eyes, lots of bark and power, east to use interior.....never had an issue with it.......rock solid since it came home.
Bought it new and have never regretted it. I enjoy it every weekend and on holidays, or when I just need a pick me up

Good idea to have a PPI with someone you trust. Check for the routine work that's been done and of course go over the car, paint, interior etc....
What sort of options does it have? Asking price? Etc.....

You will pay a little more for parts as well as maintenance I think, depending on what sort of work you can do yourself, that may save some money.....a good indy shop is invaluable.

CLS550
I'm in Georgia and the car is listed here in Marietta,GA for 46k.

It's not Certified but the records show decent maintenance. Let me know what you guys think and is the price reasonable?

Also, what s a good third party warranty to get for the AMG's if you guys have any other then the CPO.

Seems okay, a high price IMO..I'd offer 42 and see what they think. I also don't think the PP is rare as they say, a lot of guys ordered it with PP.
Let us know how you do.

The problem is, in Georgia, there's hardly ever a decent CLS63 up for sale. One of the main reason why I bought the 550 is also because I couldn't wait any longer for a decent CLS63 to show up although I waited for about 7-8 months.
But, I will go and check it out this week, see if it seems worth it.

Thanks for all the help !

I bought my 2014 CLS63 with 21k miles on it and all I have to say is good things about it. I've had one issue with a valve for the air suspension which caused the car to slam the rear metal when the car was off. However it would raise back up once you started the vehicle, but since the warranty is still in effect it was covered. Again... the motor and transmission are bulletproof on the M157. But let's get down to business and talk about what you will really need for this purchase. The most important thing to keep in mind is a CLS63 is a vehicle people buy for a reason and that's to go fast. Which means you need to check those tires out and see what type of ware is on them. Even if the tread looks good there may be inside ware that may cause a slight vibration inside the cabin through the steering wheel or floorboard. Very irritating for a car that hit the market at 120k and drives like a dump truck. You'll also want to invest into that extended warranty because sh@# does happen and more so when you don't plan for it. 30k+ miles on a car means if they haven't changed the tires its time.... especially on a sports car..... especially when its RWD. Also, check for any indications on the dashboard for auxiliary battery warnings which can be problematic when the car has sat in a car lot for months and rarely gets started. Other than that just be patient with your purchase because if I would have waited just 3 more weeks I could have gotten a 2014 CLS63 PP white with 20k miles for $59k. But I couldn't wait so I ended up getting the black 2014 CLS63 PP with 21k miles for $63k, however, the carbon fiber interior is fire. I can go on and on about different technical things on the car but I think this is a good baseline.

That sure is a pretty white 63 you have there. I can’t wait to wrap my 63 in a flat color with some bronze wheels.

i live in Georgia also and they have plenty CLS63’s around. There are two luxury dealers in Marriata and Select auto is where I purchased mine. Also refine your search on carguru.com
