Another M156 down

36,000 miles, and never been raced or abused. All M-B dealer serviced. Failed head gasket, antifreeze hooking up with the oil. Also, found that the engine & transmission mounts need replacing.

Offered $1,600 from M-B service on a $5,800 repair bill. Yeah, the car is six years old, but it listed at $120,000 new, and it seems a bit premature for failures of this magnitude.

I guess they aren't meant to be driven, at all.

Sorry to hear what happened. Is it due to the headbolt? Is it tuned? Is the vehicle still under warranty? So it looks like you are still getting stuck with $4200. I hope things work out for you.

Bone Stock

No mods, no abuse, and all service done by M-B dealers. I suspect the headbolt, I mean, what else can cause a head gasket to fail, at that mileage? It has to have been able to move and distort. The car's never run hot, so it's not a warped head.

first year of production of these engines, so expect some issues and AMGs must be driven hard to not fail, if they are pampered, they will fail.

sorry to hear about your car, i hope you sort everything up to your satisfaction.

I recall reading about MB replacing the head bolts themselves so there must have been a reason for the redesign and change. Maybe leverage the dealer?

Sorry to hear man that sucks!

Check out the sticky on the C63 Forum, quite a few M156's with the same problem. You may have a case to argue with MB. I did, mine was out of warranty by 6 months and had the head bolts failed. About A$35K repair (New Pistons, rings and all bearings replaced). I paid for the engine in and out and a service, about A$3.5K but it took 3 months of "discussions" after working out what the issue was.

Interesting concept. Yes, AMG's are meant to be driven hard. Otherwise, might as well get a non-AMG.

That's a hefty price for repair...especially when a new motor is around $40K from what I have read.

As long as one has an engine with the old headbolts, one is not safe. I have heard that's even more likely with increased pressure associated with tuning. Moreover, tuning's voiding of warranty also further worsens the possibility of coverage for repair. Of course another approach is to voluntarily replace those headbolts with new ones like these from Weistec:

The dealer told me a Motor here in Oz is a lot more than 40K, closer to 80K installed.

i saw more pampered AMGs failed than abused AMGs.

you know i wasn't serious. :D.

these engines had couple of recalls, so you better check with the dealer if recalls have been done on your car, if not. then you can fire them back to fix it under their wallet.
