Question [CLS55 AMG] Is this Sound stock or Tuned?

Hi Guys,

I recently bought a CLS55 AMG and I am very excited

The last owner told me the car is stock and has not been modified in any way. It a 2006 CLS55 AMG RHD with 111K Miles on it fully loaded except Distronic and Rear Heated Seats...

While driving I noticed the car being quieter than I expected so I checked videos on Youtube and I saw one in which the guy claims the car being stock however when downshifting the car makes an awsome noise but mine doesn't...

Here is the video :

Can someone check and tell me how this guy managed to get this sound when downshifting? Gearbox ECU Remap? Or he is lying and he has altered the exhaust system?

Cheers!

It could be that his cam is positioned right next to the exhaust.

🤣

But seriously folks... the throttle blip is a function of the engine management system, not the exhaust. (Well, unless you have the cam installed really close!) Not sure which year this started.

I’ve got a 2011 CLS63, and it does the blip. (Tried to get a clip on here, but MP4 isn’t allowed)

By cam I meant camera and the microphone that was used to record the youtube video the op is using for reference. I've always found exhaust tones to be deceiving when recording rather then in person (especially that close to the exhaust pipes themselves).

I've been shopping cls55's and 63's between 06 and 08 and found that the exhaust tone is much quieter then I expected as well in person. Not like the rumble of the newer amgs and nothing like the video you just linked. It is also possible that the poster on youtube could be lying as well and removed some sound deadening part of the exhaust system (wouldn't be the first time someone lied on youtube). But again when the camera is that close to the tailpipes it's like having your ear up against it you would not hear this noise from inside the cabin with the windows down.

Sorry Dy, I read your post before I’d had coffee. My mistake! (Good advice to the OP BTW)

IS the 2011 NA? Or turbo?

When breaking from HIGH speed is when you get the downshift sound you want.

Its not because the cam is close to the exhaust... I tried the same thing with my gopro and the sound isnt like that at all...
However my dad's Nissan GTR MY2010 does the same sound (even better) just like a heavy motorbike downshifting.

I think the guy is just lying...

2006 CLS55 AMG, IWC
I agree with several posters above, could be lying but could be stock based on the proximity of the camera to the exhaust. I have the supercharged version 2006, CLS55 (not turbo, not NA) and my exhaust is stock.
Doesn't quite sound like that from inside the cabin.
The brand new C63, sounds way crazier.

Not sure which ones he has removed, I must hook up my GoPro with my custom exhaust, and you can have a listen to that and see if that is what you looking for, so you just looking for the louder downshifting? It doesn't add any "blipping" on downshift

I dont know how to explain but do you see when these motorbikes downshift or sports car like lambos or ferrari... this noise is awsome and when I was planning on buying a CLS55 I didnt have a clue that these range of cars are quiet in comparison to C63

I think you possibly referring to "Rev matching" which is what the newer generation cars do, ours are just to old for that. I stand corrected but I think someone has brought out a tcu tune to try accomplish something like this. Regarding the noise of a stock cls, they actually louder than you think, just well insulated from inside the cabin. However you can definitely make the exhaust louder if you start removing cats etc. My exhaust is loud and I love it. Definitely a head turner when you tramp on the gas pedal. Will try remember to hook up my GoPro next time I head on out.. For now this was when I first did my exhaust, just startup and idle then give a slight rev at the end of the video, to give you an idea of the difference from stock.

Thank you kind Sir. I absolutely love it! Quiet in the cruise and then hit and it's Nascar lol. Such a jekyll n Hyde machine. Never get bored that's for sure.
