Cls65!!!!

Mercedes introduced their CLS - a four-door coupe - at the Geneva Motor Show last March - but what they didn't show was this hot AMG version, expected for the 2006 model year.

Sources are telling us the 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-12 engine will put out over 600 horsepower, with prices expected to start in the mid-$80,000 range.

Not so fast buster

Yes on the CLS65 but no V12... Big Bore V8's on the way... to replace the KompressorV8 motors.

Will make more power but equal or slightly less toruque given the lack of a blower. Some rumors say the car could have up to 600 hp form a 6.9L V8. They are bringing back the 6.9! About time

A bucket on wheels
they are releasing the 55amg as that is offical so it would make no sence to change the engine after a year.

I have read in autoweek and other magazines that the CLS will come with the V12 TT and be called the CLS65 AMG.

There is a lot of incorrect info and assumptions out here.

First of all whoever thinks that they can get a AMG V12TT for $80k+ is dreaming. Maybe you can buy just the engine for that

The mentioned pricing is, if anything, the low end of the CLS55.

The CLS55 should be replaced by the CLS63 in mid-2006, which will be a non-supercharged version with roughly the same hp but 100nm less torque (at least what is known so far and always subject to change).
Personally I always like bigger engines, but I do prefer the supercharged acceleration..Just more fun

There is talk about a CLS65, but there is a still question of market opportunity. It would be very pricey for a mid-level Mercedes and unless they throw out the inferior Airmatic suspension and replace it with ABC, the handling would suffer as well.

I am on the waiting list for the CLS 55/63. I have heard than MB plans to move to greater displacement and away from forced induction for their engines, leading me to think either that there has been a problem with the FI engines, or that FI engines have an inherent disadvantage compared to larger, normally aspirated engines. I can easily wait until 2006 for the 6.3 engine.

Any comments?

update on the CLS65 AMG from caranddriver.com

"AMG is also preparing its version of the recently introduced CLS four-door "coupe." The CLS65 AMG will share its twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V-12 with the CL65 and SL65. With an expected 604 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque, the CLS65 will carry a six-figure price tag."

Sorry but I don't believe that. Its common knowledge they are going to bring up a n/a 63 engine to replace the supercharged v8. I highly doubt they will bring back the old 6.9ltr engine.

Isn't it fun hearing all the misinformed news/rumours flying about.

Well AMG says the new motor will have 600 hp in the S-Class. Now lets assume the motor will be 6.3L. That comes out to be about 95 hp/L. So lets look at the SLK350 motor which is the same basic design. The SLK makes about 76.5 hp/L. No there is NO way AMG has a NA motor that will make 95 hp/L. THe new M5 is about 100hp/L and it spins to 9k rpm and has almost no torque. So for the new amg to make 600 hp without any forced induction, a 6.9L motor will make 87 hp/L. That figure is far more reasonalbe (still to high if you ask me really). Looking at the numbers AMG normally takes a motor and increases the hp/L by 8-10 hp/L when going from non amg to amg spec. Maybe 87 hp/L is possible after all. Who knows. Your guess is as good as mine. But to get 600hp the motor needs to be larger than 6.3L regardless of how you slice the news spin.

Wrong. AMG don't say there will be 600bhp NA in the S Class

There will be an S63 NA with 500bhp/500nm and an S65 Bi Turbo with 612bhp/1000nm.

Dude, you seriously need a new source of information

Thanks dude.... ill look into it dude....

It all depends on what displacement they run in the car. Maybe my figures are a tad high but at the numbers you say the car will be slower than yours.

The bi-turbo motor is going to pasture so you are wrong there. 3 valve motors bite the dust very soon for they do not meet new emissions regulations. Why in the world would MB spend the massive amounts of money to certify that motor for that chassis only to dump the motor months later? In V12 form you will not need to use positive manifold pressure to get 600 hp. Old 7.4L V12’s made 600 hp (with aggressive cam shafts – meaning less low end power – but new technology fixes that) so the new one should have that covered without the use of turbochargers. Good thing for boost is all fake power if you ask me.

In 6.3L form the motor will make between 500 510 if you assume a hp/L rating of 80hp/L. If you push that to 6.9 as it may be (AMG has trademarked the S69 name plate) then it will make a figure closer to 550-560 hp. With less tq the 6.3L motor should prove slower than the current Kompressor motor (can a 7g trans and a 2.82 solve that lack of tq?). Hope those numbers are low for a motor with 450 ft/lb of tq is less than great. Same issue with the M5 but you don’t’ want to rev the heck out of a Sxx like you would a M5.

If government regulations get much more strict, the future of all fast cars looks grim!

CLS65 for $80,000+? If such a beast were ever released it would be nearly double that price. The SL65 is $179,000.

There will never be a biturbo V12 CLS.
NA 6.3 engine would appear to be the logical engine progression.
