My wife's '07 BMW X3 currently has 235 50 18 all season tires but I'm looking to get some snow tires. I found a used set of 235 55 18 for sale locally and I'm wondering if I'll have any problems with the slightly taller tire. It seems the difference was .9 inches when the tires were brand new.


1" taller will most likely cause rubbing on the front spring perch ...

I live in Edmonton Alberta Canada where winter is harsh with tons of snow and ice. I drive mostly in the city, lot's of stop and go in addition to some highway driving

if it was my call given what you said about your driving needs I would go with the Michelin X-Ice XI2 in a 225/40-18 size alongf with a set of MSW type 14 wheels in 18x8

Hi just to put a bit of information about winter tyres , i have just changed over from 18 s with may summer tyres ( bridgestone re50s) to my new winter tyres on the standard size 17s 225 and 255 khumo KW27s , Last year I dId not think winter tyres were nessasary untill i tried to move with the bridgestones on all they did was spin. which has convinced me to get some

I need a new set of dedicated snows for my C55 which, besides the mods listed below, is in the process of being slightly lowered on a set of KW V2's. For winter wheels I have a set of OZ superleggera 18x8 wheels and would like a set of snow tires about 235 40 ZR 18 or 245 40 ZR 18.

I do drive in the cold but do not drive the C55 in more that 1/4 to 1/2 inch of snow. What do you recommend as a descent cost effective dedicate snow? I had Pirelli Winter Sports -- they were ok, but definately not the best.

I think you wold be well served by the Dunlop Winter Sport 3D but makes sure you get the "V" speed rated version

I'm looking for some dedicated winter tires for my 18's. I am located in northern NJ. The car is used for mostly highway and will not see any heavy snow. I want to be able to get through wet, slush, and a couple inches of snow just in case.

I wanted the following size, 235/40/18 front and 265/35/18 rear. Thanks for your help.

check out the Dunlop Winter Sport 3d ... good all around performer which will get you through a fair amount of fluffy stuff

Base on previous discussion, I am wondering if I can put 235/65-17 on my car or I have to go with bigger size (18") ..Right now, I have summer tires in 19" size.

As for tires, I am considering Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow (we don't have many days with snow on the road but it could be icy ..) - I used to that tire on previous car and it was excellent option ...

You can go with 235/35-17 on your ML with no issues. The only drawback is that you only have two wheel choices so, you better like one of them. The cjoices are the Moda EB1 and the Rial DF. I prefer the Rial. Using the Pirelli tire you mentioned the package price would be $1136.00 plus shipping,. duties & brokerage. Call me directly for a break down of those charges

Use: Daily commuter, some side street driving for two miles, then 22 miles of interstate.

I'm currently running 245 40 18 in the front and 265 35 18 in the back. I am indifferent whether the tires are the same size or not. I've thought about the Blizzaks WS60 but I may be better off with LM's or other makes/models. Thanks in advance for your input.


in your area I think you would be better off with the Dunlop Winter Sport 3D. I have dozens if not hundreds of Chicago people running those with stellar results.

I found the stock Contis had minimal grip in a film of snow as our blizzard arrived. Traction improved with more snow, but made me think winter tires might be a good idea. I have fou d your recommendAtkins for the R350 and R320. Thanks very much.


I would opt for either the Extreme Winter Contact or the Latitude X-Ice XI2 in a 235/65-17 size alnog with the Rial DF 17" wheels

Hi Luke- I have a 2006 CLK500 Coupe. I live in Lincoln, NE and may move to MN before the tires wear out. Through my research I have decided that the General Altimax Arctic will be great for me. The problem is the sizes.

My question: 1. Can I put 16" rims and tires (205/55/R16) on this vehicle? Earlier years with smaller engines have 16" stock rims with that size tire. no ... the brakes are too large

2. If I stick with the 17s that are on the car, can I use a 205/50/17? I have a pretty good understanding of tire sizes and the difference in tire height is a few millimeters.
225/45/17s have a 10.12 CM tire height, while the 205/50/17s have a 10.25 CM tire height. you can use either the 205/50-17 or the 225/45-17 on all four corners for winter but you will need new non-staggered wheels

Lastly, the General Altimax Arctic do not come in a size that matches the 245/40/17s that I have in the rear. Can I put the 205/50/17s front and rear?

Per German sources - it looks like 16" wheels should be OK on at least some W211 cars:

The 7.5Jx16 ET42 wheels appear to be OK for many W211 vehicles.

Note comments around Codes 950, 952 and P96 - steel rims not allowed with those codes. I don't know what P96 refers to but 950/952 refer to AMG/sport packages - so those of us with those options can forget about 16" wheels.

Typically, 16" wheels with reasonably narrow treads are best in the winter - otherwise the Germans themselves use 17" wheels with winter tires. Anyone trying to use larger tires in serious winter weather are fooling themselves.

I used to use Cross Terrains but Michelin switched over to the Lattitude Tours.
I hate these tires with a passion. They suck in the snow and after a few months they are almost bald.
I already replaced the right rear (drive tire) once and it is already bald.
Help....I need to give up on these Lattitude Tours!

I know it sounds strange to be looking for snow tires in June, but hey, better safe than sorry! On my other cars, I have always gone down a size for winter rims/tires, i.e.--on my Audi A4, I went from 17" summer 225/45/17 to 16" 205/55/16 for the winters.
From reading this forum, there seems to be no clear decision on whether 16" rims will work (clear) on my car.
So, given my understanding that a narrower profile is better for winter driving (slush and snow), I checked the diameter of a 205-50-17 tire on the TireRack site mounted on a 17x7" rim and it seems to measure nearly identical to the summer 225/45/17 on 17x7.5" rim (fronts)--25.1" vs. 25.0" for the Blizzak WS-70.
There are very few 17x7 rims available, but the ones specified for my MB C300 4matic sport are 17x7 with a 45-50mm offset. I am not sure about the "backspacing" or even what that means as it seems to vary widely from 5.5" to 6.5". I actually found a set of 17x7 Enkei FLC-01 rims, +50mm offset, 72mm centre bore, on another site that I like very much, but cannot determine whether they will work.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

17" is as small as you can go with your car and the suggested tire size would be 225/45-17

My car has 225 in front and 245 in the rear. What would be a good winter tire/wheel package?

Is it alright to keep them staggered or square setup all around?

Why couldn't I use 205-50-17 tires instead of the 225-45-17? The diameter is only 1/10" larger on a 17x7" rim. The load range also seems adequate. (Blizzak WS-70). A narrower tire and higher profile is best for winter, in my experience. Thanks.

Any thoughts on the Hankook Ventus AS RH07? I was told by someone they are awesome in the snow. Any negatives on these tires?

Unfortunately they do not rate very well in the deeper snow or on ice ... not horrible but, not that great either.
