More G Wagen than the G Wagen

Despite its world-renowned off-roading prowess, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class has become more of a societal status symbol than anything else since its introduction as a civilian passenger vehicle. Driving one around town has become a display of excess, opulence, and the defiance of practical logic. As such, Many aftermarket builders have taken it upon themselves, over the years, to up the ante and turn these excessive qualities of the capable mall-crawler up to 100, resulting in some of the wildest automotive creations in existence. Here are some of the craziest we've come across in recent years.

7. Brabus Convertible

Brabus has a long history of creating aftermarket variants of Mercedes-Benz vehicles. So it's no surprise that it makes a couple of appearances in a slideshow listing some gnarly G-Class builds. First up is their take on the convertible G 500 4x4. We all love the open-top G Wagen, and Brabus wanted to give those willing to spend some cash the opportunity to own a modern cabriolet for open-air adventures.

6. Carlex

A relatively new player in the world of customized Gelandewagens, Carlex has been turning heads with their retro-modern take on the off-roading beast. The Polish outfit's two-tone creations boast striking appearances that nicely tie the modern G-Class to the iconic aesthetics of classic Mercedes vehicles.

5. Mansory Gronos G63

It wouldn't be a list with the word 'crazy' in the title without a dominant presence from the infamous aftermarket builder, Mansory. The Iranian-German mastermind behind the brand has been responsible for some absolutely jaw-dropping creations over the years, and not always for the right reasons. The Gronos G63 4x4, though has been one of their most aesthetically successful offerings, in our opinion. And it certainly checks the 'crazy' box.

4. Brabus 700 4x4

Another Brabus-tuned G-Class on the list, and this time, it's the striking Brabus 700 4x4 Squared. This monstrosity comes with all the bells and whistles of a Brabus G63, but what makes it stand out even further is its lifted 4x4 Squared stance, making it impossible to miss from a mile away.

3. Refined Marques G63 Cabriolet

The Refined Marques G63 Cabriolet may not look all that crazy to be this high up this list, but what it lacks in 'in-your-face' looks, it makes up for in the details. Aside from the fact that it's a cabriolet conversion based on the latest G 63, these custom builds come with a price tag of $1.3 million!

2. Mansory Grand Entrée

And just like that, we're back to Mansory. This time, it's the Grand Entrée, which is by far one of the most unique designs based on the G-Wagen that we've ever seen. There's not one inch of this machine where one could look and not be amazed by an outlandish detail.

1. Mansory Gronos 6x6

And the award the 'in-you-face' category undoubtedly belongs to Mansory's Gronos 6x6, which takes the already insane Mercedes-AMG G63 6-wheel pickup truck and somehow makes it 10 times crazier. Perhaps the most eye-catching element of this design isn't even on the exterior, but rather, inside the cabin. The interior space of this beast has been extremely Mansory-fied, and covered almost entirely in aqua-colored leather.
