Modified 6-Wheelers

Mercedes-Benz launched its first 6-wheeler, the G63 AMG 6x6, in 2013. Since then, there have been numerous efforts by various car enthusiasts across the world to modify vehicles and turn them into 6-wheelers. Hennessey decided to add another axle to the Ford Raptor after Carlex built its own version of the 6x6 X-Class. They then named it the VelociRaptor 6x6. A group of 12 students from Nihon Automotive Technology School in Japan then went ahead to build a G63 AMG 6x6 clone from a Suzuki Jimny. In Russia, a poor man's version of the 6-wheeler G63 AMG made out of a 4x4 Lada Niva emerged from Garage 54. A 6-wheeled Mercedes 6x4 also went on sale recently on eBay, showing how much people still love 6x6 SUVs.

Engine

The ML 6x4 listed on eBay comes with a 3.2-liter V6 that churns 215 hp and 229 lb-ft of torque. The original Mercedes-Benz ML AMG 6x6 came with a 5.4-liter V8 that made up to 536 hp and 561 lb-ft of torque. The listing mentions that the engine uses petrol/LPG. Its fuel consumption is at 14.4 mpg in city driving and 10.9 mpg in highway driving. So far, the listed 6-wheeler has covered 140,000 miles.

Interior

The 2001 ML 6x4 came with plenty of cabin and boot space for its customers. This was thanks to efforts by Mercedes to make it more reliable and spacious than its predecessors. The listing mentions that the vehicle has its steering wheel mounted on the right-hand side. Other interior features include air conditioning, power locks, power seats, driver and passenger airbags, AM/FM Stereo, CD Player, Brake Assist, Cruise Control, side airbags, safety belt pre-tensioners, alarm, leather seats, and Power-assisted Steering (PAS).

Exterior

In the earlier years, build quality for the ML 6x4 was poor. The body used on the original vehicle had squeaks, rattles, and fair movement of parts. Thanks to the overhauls carried out in 2000, things improved tremendously. The 2001 version was updated further and is notably better than the earlier models. Some of the noticeable exterior features include six 17-inch alloy wheels, an AMG body kit, front fog lights, power windows, power mirrors, and roof racks.

Performance

The ML 6x4 features genuine 4-wheel-drive capability. With the right off-road package, you could easily shift its use from a luxury station wagon to a capable 4WD. The 3.2-liter V6 is linked to a responsive 5-speed automatic transmission that delivers shifts without fuss. For most cars, a high center of gravity lowers the ability to corner on sealed roads. Thanks to stability and traction controls, the ML 6x4 sticks to the road and corners safely remarkably well.

Price

For the brief moment, the AMG G63 6x6 was in production, buyers had to cough out over $500,000 to get one. For the 6-wheeled 6x4 that is listed on eBay, the owner is asking for 19,995 British pounds which is equivalent $25,760. Rarely is the Mercedes G63 6x6 put on sale and so this could be the most affordable 6-wheeled Mercedes on the market today. The lucky buyer will also get accompanying V5 registration documents and an up-to-date MOT test.
