Mercedes-AMG Teases A New EV Sedan, Reportedly With 1,000 HP
With nearly 1,000 horsepower on tap and styling cues from the Vision AMG concept, the new AMG.EA sedan aims to redefine the high-performance electric segment.
AMG’s Electric Shift Gets Real
Mercedes-AMG is nearing the reveal of its first fully electric performance sedan, built on the bespoke AMG.EA architecture. While the current AMG GT 4-Door Coupe will remain in production, this new EV marks a major pivot, establishing AMG’s presence in the premium electric performance space. It’s the most radical departure yet for the Affalterbach brand and represents a direct challenge to electric flagships like the Porsche Taycan Turbo S and Audi RS e-tron GT.
Design Echoes a Futuristic Concept
The upcoming EV closely resembles the 2022 Vision AMG Concept, and this production-ready prototype shows just how much has carried over. Its sleek silhouette, extended dash-to-axle ratio, and slim greenhouse are reminiscent of the Vision EQXX, while the sharply angled kammback rear and active rear wing highlight its performance intent. Signature three-pointed star LED lighting—both front and rear—underscores its futuristic aesthetic. Notably, the rear lighting setup borrows heavily from the concept, with circular taillights designed to evoke rocket thrusters.
Performance Rooted in New Tech
Underpinning the car is the AMG.EA platform, developed exclusively for AMG’s future EVs. It pairs axial flux motors from Yasa, a British firm acquired by Mercedes-Benz, with a next-gen high-voltage battery supplied by Sila Nanotechnologies. The motors—smaller, lighter, and more power-dense than traditional radial flux units—are expected to deliver around 500 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque each, suggesting that the base model could flirt with the 1,000-horsepower mark. A tri-motor variant has reportedly been considered, further boosting performance.
A Different Kind of Electric Drive
While some high-end EVs lean toward quiet luxury, AMG aims for a different experience. AMG CEO Michael Schiebe told Car and Driver that the new EV is "not comparable to all the electric cars that you have in the market right now", emphasizing its dynamic feedback and visceral quality. According to Schiebe, after U.S. dealers experienced the prototype, "all of them were smiling. They said that this is completely changing what they thought about electric cars."
Fast Charging, Real Range
The AMG.EA platform will feature an 800-volt architecture, enabling rapid DC charging and allowing for repeated high-performance driving without significant battery degradation. This also contributes to improved thermal management, better interior packaging, and a lower center of gravity—key elements for track-capable electric performance.
Aero Efficiency in the Details
Aerodynamics play a central role in the car’s design. Tightly-spoked aero wheels, similar to those seen on the EQXX, improve airflow and reduce drag. Cooling slats at the base of the front bumper help manage airflow around the battery and motors, replacing the need for a traditional grille. Combined with the active rear spoiler, these details contribute to overall efficiency and high-speed stability.
Not Just a Sedan: SUV Incoming
The AMG EV lineup won’t end with this sedan. A standalone SUV version riding on the same AMG.EA platform is already deep into development and has been spotted undergoing cold-weather testing. While specific specs remain under wraps, it’s expected to share most of the sedan’s powertrain and design DNA. Mercedes-AMG has hinted that this high-performance SUV will include some degree of off-road capability, possibly featuring a dedicated rally mode.
On the Horizon
The production version of this new AMG EV is expected to be revealed in the coming months, with a European market launch by late 2025. Pricing is still unconfirmed, but estimates suggest a starting figure around $130,000. More AMG.EA-based models are expected to follow, potentially including a roadgoing version of the Vision One-Eleven concept.
