A New Shape in Vegas

Mercedes used the Las Vegas Grand Prix as an opportunity to parade a lightly disguised prototype of its upcoming GT 4-Door EV. With most of the camouflage stripped away, the car displayed clear ties to the earlier AMG GT XX concept, picking up its star-pattern headlights, a sealed front fascia, vertical air curtains, and a low-profile front splitter.

The silhouette revealed additional production-ready cues: a steeply raked windshield flowing into a long, sloping roof, smooth body surfacing, and flush-mounted door handles. The rear remains partly disguised, but the lower bumper design appeared close to final.

Interior shots were limited, but earlier spy material points toward a flat-bottom steering wheel and a wide, curved freestanding display reminiscent of the setup shown in the GT XX concept. The prototype seen in teaser clips also carried pop-out door handles, confirming at least one detail of the production model’s exterior hardware.

A Ground-Up Platform for AMG

The GT 4-Door EV will be the first vehicle to use the AMG.EA platform, a clean-sheet electric architecture engineered specifically for AMG models. Mercedes describes the structure as using a combination of aluminum, steel, and composite materials to reduce mass while maintaining high rigidity.

This platform is shared with an upcoming full-size electric SUV slated to arrive roughly a year after the sedan.

Axial-Flux Power: AMG’s New Core

The car is expected to use up to three axial-flux electric motors, supplied by the Mercedes-owned motor specialist Yasa. In the GT XX concept, these ultra-compact motors produced over 1,341 hp (1,000 kW / 1,360 PS). Output in the production sedan will likely be lower, though AMG leadership has emphasized that the platform was designed to handle extreme performance levels.

Charging capability is another key point. The concept system supported 850-kW DC fast charging at 1,000 amps, a rate that could theoretically add 249 miles of driving range in five minutes, provided the infrastructure can deliver it.

Simulated Sound and Shifts

AMG knows not all longtime buyers are eager to part with internal-combustion theatrics. Its teaser campaign features Gabriel Macht (of Suits) and includes a clip of George Russell thrashing a prototype that emits what sounds like a traditional AMG powertrain, completely simulated, but timed to driving inputs.

Mercedes-Benz R&D lead Markus Schäfer has also hinted at simulated gearshifts, echoing what Hyundai has implemented in the Ioniq 5 N. Earlier teaser footage showed an audible “cutoff” during acceleration, suggesting AMG is planning a shift-mimicking feature tied to the electric powertrain’s torque modulation.

Endurance, Not Just a Power Number

High-output EVs are known for delivering peak power in short bursts, often only a few laps on a track, before thermal limits intervene. AMG has been working to counter this limitation. In August, the GT XX concept ran at Italy’s Nardò high-speed oval for eight days straight, averaging 186 mph. Over one 24-hour window, it covered 3,405 miles, stopping only for driver changes and charging.

This demonstration suggests AMG intends to market the GT 4-Door EV not just as a quick car, but one capable of holding maximum output for extended periods.

Countdown to Debut

AMG has not committed to a firm debut date, though a reveal is expected late this year or early next year, with U.S. sales likely beginning as a 2027 model. A companion EV SUV will follow afterward, based on the same architecture.

For now, the Las Vegas prototype and teaser campaign signal that Mercedes-AMG’s first ground-up electric performance sedan is nearly ready, and that the brand wants it to feel like more than just another high-power EV.
