Mercedes Planning V8-Powered 646 HP CLE 63 And G-Wagen Cabriolet
A limited-run 646-horsepower coupe, a new GT Black Series, and a G63 Cabriolet headline a product wave that mixes traditional AMG muscle with upcoming electric models.
CLE 63 Debut
Mercedes-AMG is reportedly preparing a new flagship performance coupe based on the CLE, and it won’t be a high-volume product. According to reports shown to dealers, the upcoming AMG CLE 63 will be limited to just 30 examples worldwide, making it one of the rarest modern AMG models. The car is expected to debut as part of the brand’s ultra-exclusive Mythos lineup, a series reserved for highly limited special projects.
The coupe was previewed privately during a dealer meeting in Sindelfingen, Germany, where representatives from the United States and Canada were shown several upcoming models across both combustion and electric lineups.
A Return To V8 Power
At the center of the CLE 63’s appeal is its engine. The coupe is expected to produce around 646 horsepower, a significant jump compared with the CLE 53’s output. Reports suggest the power will come from AMG’s familiar twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8, rather than the controversial four-cylinder plug-in hybrid system used in the latest C63.
Earlier plans reportedly considered using that smaller hybrid powertrain, but criticism of AMG’s downsized engine strategy appears to have pushed the company toward a more traditional setup. In this configuration, the V8 is expected to provide nearly all of the performance, though a mild-hybrid system could still be included.
Fallout From The Four-Cylinder Experiment
The return to a V8 highlights a shift in strategy for AMG after the mixed reception to the four-cylinder C63 plug-in hybrid. Enthusiasts and customers criticized the move away from large engines that had long defined AMG’s character. By bringing a high-output V8 back to a compact performance model, AMG appears to be responding directly to that feedback. Reports indicate the engine could also appear in other future models, potentially including the next generation of the C-Class AMG lineup.
Future GT Black Series
Another vehicle reportedly shown to dealers was a new AMG GT Black Series, which would sit above the already powerful GT 63 Pro. While official specifications remain unknown, the model is expected to use the two-door AMG GT Coupe as its foundation and likely adopt an even more aggressive version of the V8.
To justify its position at the top of the lineup, the Black Series would almost certainly exceed the 603 horsepower produced by the GT 63 Pro. With the CLE 63 rumored to produce roughly 646 horsepower, the next Black Series could reach similar or higher figures.
G-Class Goes Convertible
Dealers were also shown an unusual addition to the lineup: a Mercedes-AMG G63 Cabriolet. The model would revive an open-top version of the G-Class for the first time in roughly three decades. Unlike the electric variants emerging across the Mercedes lineup, the Cabriolet is expected to retain the familiar twin-turbocharged V8 from the current G63.
The SUV would feature four doors and an electrically retractable fabric roof, combining the traditional off-road vehicle with a more lifestyle-oriented configuration. Production is reportedly planned to begin in 2027, with U.S. deliveries following the year after.
Electric AMGs On The Way
Despite the renewed emphasis on V8 power, Mercedes-AMG is still moving forward with electric performance models. Dealers reportedly previewed three upcoming EVs built on a dedicated AMG platform. The first is expected to be an electric successor to the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe.
Two electric SUVs are also planned, one with proportions similar to a traditional performance SUV and another featuring a lower, coupe-like roofline. Early projections suggest the electric GT could deliver around 400 miles of range, while the SUVs may reach at least 300 miles.
North America Takes Priority
Many of these future vehicles appear to be targeted heavily at the North American market. With demand in China leveling off, Mercedes reportedly sees the United States and Canada as its strongest growth opportunities. The strategy blends traditional AMG hallmarks, large engines, and limited-production performance cars with new electric offerings.
If the reports prove accurate, the 646-horsepower CLE 63 could serve as a symbolic starting point for that shift, marking a return to the kind of V8 performance that built AMG’s reputation.
